Finn's FTM Top Surgery

Hi, my name is Finn and I'm a 19 (almost 20) trans man. I've been out for 2 years now and have been on testosterone for about 8 months. Dealing with gender dysphoria (being uncomfortable with the biologically female parts of my body) has been a constant struggle for me, long before I came out and even long before I knew I was transgender myself. One of my main causes of dysphoria is my chest so I bind in an attempt to alleviate it. Binding involves wearing a tight compression garment to flatten the chest, this also impacts my lungs, back and ribs. The obvious choice here would to give my body a break but because of my dysphoria I find it more mentally uncomfortable to not wear my binder than how physically uncomfortable it is to wear it. Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place! Having top surgery will remove my breast tissue and give me a more masculine chest, this will, in turn, remove my dysphoria.

Over the years I have put away money for this surgery but due to low and inconsistent income it's clear that I need a bit of help. Unfortunately this surgery is still considered cosmetic despite the positive mental health benefits it brings, so I am not able to get insurance or funding to cover it. I am looking to get it done by Dr. Chris Porter at Christchurch's St. George's Hospital. The procedure will cost $16,000 which includes a consultation, anaesthetic fees and hospital fees, I will also need funds for travel and accommodation as I will be travelling from Wellington.
