We're commissioning a crucial investigation into the fossil fuel projects in Aotearoa and those behind them. Help us make it happen!
Auckland
The fossil fuel industry is the heart of the climate change beast. If we are going to save the climate and give ourselves and our children a world free from extreme weather events, floods and all the other nasty effects that climate change creates, we need to keep fossil fuels in the ground. This means no new coal, oil and gas projects and a speedy transition to clean energy!
Banks have the power to make or break new fossil fuel projects. All the major banks operating in NZ have made commitments to the Paris Agreement to keep global warming below 2 degrees but none of them are cutting off the finances to the fossil fuel industry. It is time for them to put their money where their mouths are - and that is surely not fossil fuels!
This project will map out any banks' financing activities and investments in fossil fuel infrastructure and planned infrastructure in Aotearoa - including coal mining and coal-fired power, oil and gas.
This information has never been available in New Zealand before - it is crucial that we know who is planning to dig out more pollution into our lives!
You can make this research happen so we can hold our banks to account and stop new coal, oil and gas projects from going ahead - a critical step towards building the New Zealand we want for us and our children!
We are tackling the fossil fuel industry for a safe climate future!
350 Aotearoa is the New Zealand arm of the international climate movement 350.org, which aims to unite the world around climate change solutions. Our mission is to campaign for a fossil-free future, and inspire climate action in communities across New Zealand.
We need this research to be top-notch and robust, so we're commissioning Profundo, an economic research consultancy that specialises in analysing commodity chains, financial institutions and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues, based in Amsterdam. They will access major international financial databases and use the information to map the financing of fossil fuel activities in New Zealand.
