Your gift will release this brave orangutan family to a life of freedom - donate now to make their dream a reality!
Auckland
Your donation will free Du, Dai and Du Mal onto a forested, pre-release island where they can climb, play, and thrive. Dai and Du Mal will become the next generation of wild Bornean orangutans. Only approximately 57,350 are left in the wild, according to BOSF.
Du’s Story: A Devoted Mother
Meet Du, a 25-year-old Bornean orangutan mother, and her spirited toddlers, Dai and adopted Du Mal. Rescued from a zoo in 2006, Du thrived through the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation’s (BOSF) Jungle School at Nyaru Menteng, mastering survival skills and gaining independence. In 2014, she earned her place on a pre-release island, tasting the freedom of the treetops. In 2022, Du’s story took a remarkable turn. She gave birth to Dai and, in an extraordinary act of love, adopted Du Mal, an orphaned baby orangutan - something rare among orangutans, who typically raise only one young at a time.
To give them the best care, Du and her babies were moved back to the rehabilitation centre in 2023. Now, after two years of dedicated nurturing, they’re ready to return to a pre-release island. Du and her family could swing through the forest again - if we can raise $7,500 urgently needed for:
• $3000 safe transport to the pre-release island, reuniting the family with their forest home.
• $1500 orangutan radio transponder implants for the post-release monitoring
• $3000 supplemental food for the family for a year
Your donation, no matter the size, will bring this loving family closer to the wild. Donate now.
I volunteered at Nyaru Menteng and was impressed by the dedication and care of the staff to improve the lives of the orangutans with enrichment activities and positive stimulation. Photos are island or orphan orangutans. Photos of cages are not allowed.
Funds are needed for Du and her babies to move from a cage to a pre-release, sanctuary island so they can live a natural life and learn skills to be relocated to wild jungle and live their best lives.
If funding is insufficient for full release it will be used for greater enrichment activities such as a hammock for Du and climbing tools for the toddlers.
🌿 Final Update – Thank You All 🌿 18 September 2025
Thank you for supporting Du's family! The campaign ends today, and while we haven’t reached the full target, I am deeply grateful for every single person who has given, shared, or sent encouragement. Together, we’ve raised nearly $1,000. Your generosity will provide enrichment, food, and care that helps this remarkable Mum and her babies thrive while they wait to return to the forest. It will happen, but not as soon as would be ideal.
So what will your money be spent on? When the babies contracted malaria the family was moved closer to the vet clinic for dedicated 24/7 care. The cage they are in now is very basic so money will be spent on a hammock and climbing materials, as well as ongoing vet care until they are fully recovered. These are all practical things that will enhance their life longer term, but another thing I will ask for the money to be spent on is for special treats, like dragon fruit and various nuts, which the babies love but is too expensive to be provided as standard enrichment treats.
The funds will enhance their caged life and keep them happy, healthy and in good shape to be released, because of the support you have provided for them.
Since we haven’t reached our goal, if any donor wishes to have their money returned, please let me know. I won’t forward the funds to Nyaru Menteng until the end of September to give you time to consider this.
From my heart – thank you. 💚
Helen

Oh wow. Thanks so much.🧡 Really appreciate it.
No. Thank you Lorelle. This is super generous. I'm about to update that since we haven't reached the total donors can ask for their money back or have it go to enhance the family's life while they are still caged 🧡
Thanks so much Caroline. This is super generous and hugely appreciated.
