From flood to fire to losing everything.
Whirinaki, Northland
On 26 March, devastating floodwaters swept through Whirinaki, leaving at least half a metre of water covering the valley floor. Cherise Coward and her whānau were among those heavily affected, trying to recover from the damage caused by the flooding.
Tragically, not long after, their family home was destroyed by fire, believed to have been caused by water-damaged wiring following the flood. In a matter of moments, they lost everything they owned.
For the past four and a half weeks, the family has been living in emergency housing while trying to navigate the overwhelming process of starting again. They have only just been able to secure housing in Whangārei, 130kms away from Whirinaki, meaning they must now relocate and rebuild their lives in a completely new place. With only the clothes they packed when evacuating, they now face the huge task of furnishing their new house and replacing the everyday essentials for themselves.
This loss has been extra challenging as the family cares for their special needs child and works to rebuild stability, comfort, and a sense of normality for their whānau.
We are reaching out to seek for financial support to help Cherise and family purchase furniture, bedding, linen, and basic household necessities to turn their house into a home. Gratitude to Te hapū o te Hikutu, Kokohuia Marae, Hokianga Health, FNDC, MSD, Bald Angels, Ngāti Wai and many others who have helped them. Arohanui.
Ngā mihi nui for your kindness, aroha and support.

Kia ora koutou,
Firstly, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who has contributed to this kaupapa. Your words of aroha, your kindness, and your pūtea have been received with deep gratitude. In a time that has been incredibly challenging, your support has wrapped around this whānau like a korowai of care and compassion.
Cherise and her whānau have now settled into their new community. While the journey has not been easy, your generosity has helped ease that transition in meaningful ways. Because of you, they are beginning to rebuild, to find their feet again, and to slowly turn their house into a home. Each koha, no matter the size, has played a part in restoring comfort, dignity, and hope.
Beyond the practical support, it is the whakaaro behind your giving that has truly uplifted them — knowing they are not alone, that people care, and that aroha continues to flow even in the toughest of times. That sense of connection and collective strength means more than words can express.
On behalf of Cherise and her whānau, thank you from the bottom of their hearts. Your generosity will never be forgotten, and your kindness will continue to live on in the home and lives you have helped rebuild.
Arohanui.
On behalf of Cherise and whānau x
