The success and reach of the Wai-ora Community Gardens have recently featured The Weekend Gardener Magazine, the front page of The Christchurch Mail, The Press and also on the on-line gardening show "The Daily Fix".

The publicity has seen requests to join our Community Gardens grow massively and includes 120 school children that will start their gardening journey with us this season.
With a huge influx of school children and other groups we simply do not have enough tools for people to use, especially tools that are appropriate for children.
We fund 95% of our operation and receive no government funding or support and minimal financial support from The Christchurch City Council or other funders whom often struggle with our desire to support community's as oppose to ticking their boxes.
However, we do have some fantastic Nationally leading business sponsors whom know us and want to support grass roots community initiatives. They support us with thousands of quality seedlings, potting mix and the like and without their support we would not be as successful at supporting our community as we are.
Our community gardens reaches a huge demographic and we have groups that include not only school children but local families, youth groups, mental health organisations, disabilities groups, rotary, migrant and ethnic groups, church groups, guys recently released from prison, pensioner groups and others.
The beauty is that these gardens give a place and a space for people whom would possibly never meet, to get to know each other and to understand how important each person is to creating a community.
My name is Ricky Ehau and I am the General Manager of Wai-ora Trust, which in essence means I am the fundraiser, cleaner, cook, begger, builder, painter and plumber.
