Give A Little Back For Greenie

David (Greenie) is an incredibly selfless man who does so much for others. It’d be great to return the favour. Please help us.

Napier, Hawke's Bay

David (Greenie) has been the Taradale AFC first team manager for 35 years in a row. This has encompassed approximately 600+ games. He epitomises everything Taradale AFC is all about. David doesn’t have any brothers, sisters or children playing at the club but is considered family by us all.

David had childhood leukemia, which many who have this don't make it to adulthood. He has never let this get in the way of what he does for the club and merely considers his treatments as “something he does”.

In early 2021, it was discovered that David had a brain tumour. After surgery, 6 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, followed by 6 monthly cycles of chemotherapy, David passed the initial 12 month prognosis he was given. In June 2022, at his 3 monthly check up, the oncologist noticed a significant increase in the size of the tumour. As surgery and more radiation was no longer an option for treatment, chemotherapy was suggested. However this alone was not going to prove effective. In order to try and improve his prognosis, the oncologist suggested an anti angiogenic therapy known as 'Avastin'. David is due to have six cycles of this every fortnight (he has already had two treatments) at a cost of $9,093.35 each time. This is not funded by our health care system so it’s at David’s expense.

It has got to a stage now where this treatment is becoming a financial burden. As a club, we would like to do everything we can in order to support David, as he has done so for us for so many years.

Dan Ball's involvement (page creator)

I have had the privilege of playing in Taradale AFC teams that Greenie has managed over the years. He is also my uncle's best friend. Greenie is an incredibly selfless man and it'd be great to give back to someone who has given so much to others.

Use of funds

The money will be spent on paying for the anti-angiogenic therapy called 'Avastin' which will help control the cancer in David's brain (this is not funded by our heath care system).

This photo was taken on the 8th April 2021, two days post surgery, when our lives were turned upside down.

As David continues his battle, we are eternally grateful for all our family and friends, who have been beside us as we faced the ups and downs. And for all the family, friends, friends of friends and even complete strangers who continue to support us.

"There are many we meet who are just passing through,

And then there are the few who stay to pull us through."
