Glenbervie School is creating a new play space which encourages cooperation, collaboration and creativity. A place where imagination reigns.

Glenbervie School are into fundraising for year 2 of the playground project. We are raising money for a basket swing - $5,600 (photos of similar swings are in the gallery), monkey bars - $1100, a gyro fling - $2150 and a flying track - $3000. Sound like something you'd like to play on as a kid? Read more below about our playground project and please make a donation at a level that your family or business can afford.
Our current playground is past its use by date and in desperate need of an overhaul. In keeping with our beautiful natural surroundings, and with our passion for creative, hands on learning opportunities, we invited our students to imagine their ultimate playground.
A term of intensive learning culminated in a celebration of 3D models, plans and ideas for a natural, active play space. A play space which encourages cooperation, collaboration and creativity. A play space where imagination reigns. A play space with built in differentiation so that students can safely test limits and explore possibilities.
There were many recurring and popular themes emerging from the students ideas - movement pathways including, slides, swings and flying foxes. Water play, construction and opportunities to create outdoor theatre and music. Places where swinging hand over hand on monkey bars could be more varied, higher and more challenging for older students, Places which evoked all the senses and which were accessible for all our students. A friendship seat so no one need feel alone.
The students presented us with the dream and they need us to make it into a reality. We have many skilled and willing members of our school community keen to donate their time and what resources they have available. We are committed to recycling and reusing as much of the existing playground as possible however we still need financial support for the purchase of large ticket items which cannot be sourced from our community. These include several thousands of dollars for large slides, wobble bridges, climbing wall mounts and other playground equipment.
Additional fundraising efforts are taking place in conjunction with this campaign. The Glenbervie School PTA have donated $10,000 so far, we have run a garage sale and have been applying for grants. Unfortunately schools cannot apply for grants for playground equipment at most of the usual agencies, but we are doing our best to raise funding wherever we can to make the playground the best space it can be.
Check out the gallery for before and concept drawings to show you what we are planning to build.
All donations of $100 or more will get official recognition in the playground in the form of a tile set into the concrete surrounding the play areas. Donors who would like to donate the full cost of a particular equipment should specify that in their donation and will get a higher level of recognition on that part of the playground.
Thanks for your support!!
Glenbervie School is a rural primary school in Whangarei, New Zealand. The current project that we are raising money for is a new play-space for our fantastic children.
Playground Slide Update 19 October 2017
As you may be aware, our new
double slide was stolen over the
school holidays. We were
overwhelmed with the support we
received from our community to help recover and
replace the slide. We received much needed
donations via our Give-A-Little campaign and the
Playground Centre sent us a replacement free of
charge! On Sunday the original slide was
recovered. Upon letting the Playground Centre
know the good news, they made our day even
brighter by insisting that we keep their donated
slide. They felt that an extra slide could be utilised
somewhere else in the playground and that we
deserved it. What a fabulous company. Rest
assured, any donations given during this time will
still be used to purchase much needed playground
equipment.
