GSD pup Simba needs surgery - xrays reveal leg requires amputation

$6,600 donated
Given by 84 generous donors in around 3 months

To help 7 week Simba to have a Second Leash on Life.

Nationwide

Last Friday I got a call from a vet hoping we would step up and help a young pup bought in for euthanasia because he had a broken leg, which had happened 3 weeks prior. I could not believe this would be a justified reason for ending a dog's life so said absolutely. Then I asked his age, and was told 6 1/2 weeks!!!!. After collecting him I took him to the Trust Vet, Forrest Hill Veterinary Clinic, and the previous vet had emailed the xrays through to them. A referral was made for him to be seen at ARC last Monday and he stayed with me over the weekend on cage rest and pain meds. He was admitted Monday for CT of the leg and it shows a Grade 2 dislocation of the right elbow with fracture but due to age there is not much mineralisation of the bones to enable fixation of the bones so they want him to grow a little more. In 2 weeks he will have another xray to see progress.

Meantime he is on crate rest and stronger pain meds.

Obviously this is all going to cost a lot of $$ and without our monthly BBQ's we need some help.

Options for treatment are framework to support the positioning if there is enough mineralisation in his bones, another procedure which involves cutting out part of the bone and repositioning or worse case scenario amputation which I really hope will not happen.

About us

We are an registered charitable trust finding homes for German Shepherds who have been neglected, abandoned. or at risk of euthanasia rather than providing medical care.

Simba update  21 August 2021

Just had to share the progress on Simba, it has been amazing. So very grateful to those who contributed to make this possible. It really was the right decision. To see how he is now becoming a normal puppy rather than the quiet subdued boy he was prior to amputation reinforces how much pain he must have been in with the smashed elbow.
