Please help Hamish McLean go to IPC World Swimming Champs in Glasgow July 2015.
Otago
My name is Hamish McLean, I am 15 years old and live in Wanaka, New Zealand. In April 2015 I was selected to compete and represent New Zealand in the IPC (Para} World Swimming Championships in Glasgow July 2015. I am the youngest of eight Para Swimmers and because I am an unfunded athlete I am asking for your help to get me there.
I have Achondroplasia and have an S6 classification as a para swimmer. I will be competing in the 400m Freestyle, where I am ranked 8th in World, and 50m Butterfly, 200m Individual Medley and 100m Freestyle.
Hamish needs $10,0000 to get to Florida for a training camp and to get to Glasgow for the World Swimming Championships.
I am going to the training camp where I will just be focused on training twice a day with the team and coaches. I think it will be good as they will video me swimming and find ways that can get the little tweaks that will help improve my time. In particular my dives and turns I will focus on. It will also be good because I will be training in a 50m pool which I need practice in as this is what we race in Glasgow.
I think that at Glasgow I will get good experience at racing internationally but my goal is to improve my world ranking from 8th in 400 Free and be able to qualify for Paralympics in Rio in 2016.
I go to Mount Aspiring College in Wanaka, New Zealand. In April 2015 I competed at the NZ Swimming Open Championships in Auckland, and was very excited to qualify to represent NZ at the Para (IPC) World Championships. I leave in June to go with the New Zealand team of eight to a training camp and then onto Glasgow in July to race 13-19th. My favourite event is the 400 Freestyle but I enjoy competing in all strokes.
Now I am training hard, swimming 2 hour sessions six times per week plus gym sessions. My goal in competing at the Para (IPC) World Championships is to do my best for NZ and to improve my international ranking. I have my sights set on the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Thanks for the help you are providing in getting me started.
Thanks to all coaches and teachers 15 June 2015
I leave at the end of next week so its really busy. I have increased my swim training to 8 times a week so that's about 16hours in the water. Also doing one gym and one Pilates session a week still. Feeling busy as also trying to get ahead of school work and prepare that for going away. I am doing NCEA level 1 so have a few internals at the moment. Teachers are being really supportive and all my coaches are helping as well. Thanks to Fi my Swim coach who guides everything and gets me ready to do PBs.
Michelle and Keith, Thanks very much for helping me it is really appreciated. Hamish
