Help to repair our great great grandparents broken headstone.
Southland
Whilst recently travelling in our beautiful country, I've had the pleasure of spending some time in the Invercargill area and have visited the burial site of my Great Great Grandparents, William and Rachel Judge who passed away in June 1899 and December 1911. Unfortunately the Headstone is in disrepair so I decided to ask a local stone mason for his thoughts on what we could possibly do to get it restored.
Ian from Maiden Stone in Invercargill has been out to the site and has given me a quote of $2770.00 for the following work.. Ground foundations stabilized, Level Plinth and Concrete the entire area to 100mm thick and smooth finish. Then removing the headstone, glue and pin the granite together, re-silver the lettering and re-installing onto the plinth.
My name is Sharon Lankshear and I am the great great granddaughter of William and Rachel Judge. My mother was Heather Lankshear ( nee: Costley), My grandmother was Thelma Costley ( nee Smith), My Great Grandmother was Mary Smith ( nee: Judge)... Daughter of Rachel and William Judge.
I'm asking if we can gather a small amount of money from all of the family to repair the headstone so the following generations can have the pleasure of visiting our ancestors as we are able to. If you are able to donate it would be great to know your lineage to Rachel and William.
The inscription on the headstone is:
In Loving Memory Of
William Judge, Died 8th June 1899 aged 65 years
Also his wife Rachel, Died 16th Dec 1911 aged 69 years
Also their daughters
Elizabeth, Died 5th Oct. 1905, aged 29 years.
Agnes, Died 19th Aug. 1907, aged 25 years. Interred at Christchurch
Helen, Died 8th March 1910, aged 30 years.
And their son
David Died 7th Oct. 1884, aged 16 years.
Headstone repair
Headstone repairs - completion 4 June 2021
Thank you for your contribution in helping to repair and reinstate the headstone of William & Rachel Judge.
I am happy to send an update and let you know that the work has been completed and the headstone stands proudly as it did back in 1899.
The ground below the headstone is now solid and the headstone has metal rods through it, so it won't be moving anywhere. The Stonemason has reported that when he gathered all the pieces to repair it, there was one piece missing so he has had to do a little bit of extra work to complete it, but he is very happy with the final result considering the state it was in.
The only comment he did make was that the wrought iron fence work surrounding the headstone now looks a bit tired. He has quoted us $500 to kill the rust and re-paint it if we wanted to get this done.
I would like to pass on my thanks to everyone for joining me on this project, with the hope that one day we may be able to meet in Invercargill at the cemetery where our ancestors are laid to rest.
Thanks
Sharon
This is very generous. We are in the last stages of repairs now and very soon we will have a beautiful headstone to pay our respect to our ancestors.
Thank you once again Sandra
Thanks again Merv. Next week we will be making a start on the ground work and you extra contribution will make a big difference in getting us over the line.
Thank you Kate. We're getting closer to our goal :)
