Phong's brave cancer fight

Phong Nguyen is a 16-year-old year old from Christchurch whose year has turned into a challenging one. On 13th October 2023, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of small cell carcinoma (small cell lung cancer). Unfortunately, the results have shown that it has been an extensive metastatic disease with left upper lobe mass infiltrating the left hilar structures, an extensive body metastatic disease including a large right scapula lesion, extension of abnormal soft tissue in the spinal canal a L1 and L5 level as well as an extensive skeletal metastatic disease. Now he needs to undergo further testing and treatment.

Many of you will know Phong (and his 12 year old brother Son) from Burnside High School. He is a member at local golf course Russley and has had many great achievements with this club.

Or you might know his Mum – Nhan Nguyen who works at Plato, or Phong's dad Hai Nguyen.

Phong is an incredible young man. He is kind, gentle, strong and a deep thinker. He LOVES golf and dreams of getting back onto the Russley Golf Course.

He loves his family and friends and always puts them first.
