Trying to help a homeless pensioner get a campervan for him and his dogs before winter sets in.
Ashburton, Canterbury
Ash is often seen at the dog park which is where I found him this morning to get the picture. NZ housing can't find him a home and he can't part with his dogs, so he has been living in his car for more than a year, we often chat with him as he walks his dogs at the dog park behind Kmart.
He has been trying to get a loan to buy something better than a car to sleep in, but has only managed to rent this Estima for $100 a week, which is slightly more comfortable than sleeping on the front seat of his car. He has applied for a 'living alone' allowance but can't get it because he doesn't have a fixed address! I would love to help him buy a campervan to make his life more comfortable. He is in Ashburton so I may end up driving him to Christchurch to collect it if we raise enough.
$4500 would get a reasonable Estima campervan, around $12000 would get a van with standing space. $20 000-30 000 would get a nice Transit with heaps of room compared to being crammed into what he lives in now.
Please just help get him something before winter sets in and he has to spend another miserable season like this! I will share the story with the Ashburton Guardian where you could verify the outcome.
Update: 15/05/24 As soon as the story went on the news he was contacted and has been given a home to stay in. However he still has nothing but what was in his car, and the transmission is failing on his vehicle so he does really need the money to replace his vehicle, which no longer needs to be a campervan.
I know him from the dog park and often chat to him
Updated on 17/05/24: Donations will go towards setting up his new place, vet bill for his older dog that passed away, and hopefully a better vehicle.

A decent campervan (or a van, Transit etc depending on how much we raise), any extra funds will be given to him to help with expenses.
Ash is settled in his new home. 9 September 2024
Ash was very grateful for all the contributions that helped him set up his new home. Pension doesn't pay much which is especially hard on people who never grew up with Kiwisaver. Going from living in a car to a small house obviously needed some funds to get furniture and besides the donations of furniture Ash was able to buy some things to set up his new home. Thank you!
