Help for Hughie's surgery and recovery

Ensuring that little Hughie has the best possible chance of a smooth recovery from surgery after the dog attack

Nationwide

My dear friend Freyja's teenage tiny terrier, Hughie, was attacked last week. He was picked up and shaken by a large, off leash dog. After taking a turn for the worse over the weekend, Hughie was transferred to Massey in Palmerston North for further diagnostics and had a major surgery on Monday. This surgery was massive (especially for such a little fella) and there's a ways to go until he's out of the woods and can come home.

While Hughie does have insurance, the costs have already exceeded the annual benefit limit and his family need some help covering the costs associated with his care. Hughie's family are so incredibly thankful and humbled by the people around them who have huddled to offer support ❤️

Warning: graphic medical description of surgery findings below ⚠️

During surgery it was discovered that Hughie's bowel was forced in-between his bladder and kidneys, he has a torn muscle and significant bruising around his penis, and damage to one of the blood vessels to his left testicle. The surgeons managed to get the intestine back in the correct place, checked everything over - nothing perforated - cleaned everything out and packed to try and keep it in place.

HE'S HOME!!!!   7 October 2024

From Freyja:

Finally, after a week away our boy is home ❤️ he's lost some weight and muscle condition but otherwise is at about 50% beans capacity and not thrilled about being captive. Keeva was beside herself with joy to see him while the cats have yet to comment. Everyone at Massey has told us what a sweet and happy boy he is. We've missed that energy so much and we are so happy to have him back where he belongs.
