We're in a pickle and could do with your help to fund an operation (and rehabilitation) for our beloved dog.
Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui
If you know us (Nikki and Sam), then chances are you know our awesome dog Tui, a six-year-old love bully Staffy-X. We adopted her from the pound in 2018 just after we moved to Whanganui.
Unfortunately, Tui's incredible lust for life has now gotten the better of her. We've been advised by our vet that she has a ruptured cruciate ligament in her back leg. She cannot bear any weight on this leg and is on strict crate rest, only allowed out to eat and do her business. As you can imagine, this situation has been distressing for all of us.
For Tui to have the best possible quality of life, her injury requires surgery and a lengthy recovery period. She'll be spending at least another 6+ weeks in the crate and then a rehabilitation journey. We've also been informed there's a greater than 50% chance she will require this surgery again in future for her other back leg.
To proceed with the surgery, we must pay an initial deposit of $1500, which by itself is a huge stretch for us at the moment. Especially as we are both self-employed and recently depleted our savings by funding an urgent trip to the UK to see family.
Once the deposit is paid, our vets are good sorts and can offer us an extended payment plan from there, but this still leaves us in a precarious position. That's why we're asking for help.
We're deeply appreciative that everyone is struggling at the moment in various ways. Thank you so much for even considering a donation! Let us know if you'd like to donate to us directly.
All donations will be used to fund Tui's surgery, follow-up appointments, x-rays and hydrotherapy treatment. We also need to build a small ramp outside our front door to get her in and out of the house without her using steps.
Pupdate #3: Making progress! 24 July 2024
It's now been six weeks since Tui had her cruciate ligament surgery. Can you believe it? Time is going so quickly. Here's the latest:
Tui's fur is about 80% grown back now, which I'm sure she's appreciating since it's wintertime. Yesterday, was an important milestone; she had an x-ray to check how well her bones were healing. And the vet told us that her healing is above average. Yay!
For the most part, she's been an absolute trooper throughout this part of her recuperation -- and only suffered one extra injury trying to escape her crate...
Now that we've received good news from the vet, we can start increasing her time out of confinement and give her a few extra minutes of walking time each day to help her build up her strength. It will still probably be some months before everything's back to status quo, and we'll still need to take care, but we're feeling relieved to know that the surgery has been successful.
We hope you're all doing OK out there. Thanks again for your support!
