    Hi team

Over the past couple of weeks Haley has been working with a reporter from a local newspaper and it’s been published now.

It’s important to Haley that the message gets out there of the importance of self breast examination, asking questions of your medical team and investigating alternative treatment options, so she has shared her story in the hope it may help others.

You can read the article here:

  • 2022 update so far

      19 May 2022
    Main image

Sorry for the lack of updates….Haley has been doing her best to hold down her job, get her treatments, care for her family, recover from her Ovary removal surgery in December and recover from COVID.

Most importantly though they have been trying to make memories! They went as a family to a stunning house in Pauanui with the Valois family, hiked up Mount Pauanui, paddle boarded, and hung out in the spa tub. And Haley recently went to Queenstown with Karleen for more respite and did more hiking up The Remarkables etc. While she was there she visited the famous Bradrona, a fence line covered in Bras and a donation site for The Breast Cancer Foundation of NZ

Haley and Tony are also due to celebrate their 12th wedding anniversary in August.

Haley is currently suffering a setback in that she has Mastitis in the breast with the Mass, not a complication that is needed right now but she’s getting through it as she can.

So what has been happening in the last few months with Haley and her treatments?

In December Haley underwent surgery to remove her Ovaries to help stop the hormone supply to the cancers. In typical Haley style she discharged herself home a few hours after the operation. Recovery was hard and seems there was a few complications during surgery but that hurdle has been overcome now and Haley is now managing menopause

In January Haley had an updated scan that was AMAZING! (breast mass shrunk from 21mm to 14mm, no signs of cancer in the armpit lymph nodes, liver lesion all gone, lungs improving but still innumerable lesions, and found 3 spots on the spine that look like they are responding to treatment). In the months leading up to this scan Haley had been using the Givealittle funds to use alternative therapies aggressively in conjunction with traditional medicine and the scan shows the combination was working well.

Unfortunately the infusions of Vitamin C had to be dropped back due to costs and supply issues and her veins were starting to get damaged (common in patients relying on multiple access times a week) and it was making finding a vein hard. So the infusions dropped from 2 a week at 90gm to 1 infusion every 7 to 10 days with 60 to 80gm hoping that would help with the veins.

Haley had her next scan in May which showed that there was absolutely NO change besides the breast mass increased to 16mm.

In light of this the plateau and the slight increase in the breast mass Haley is now trying to increase her supplementary therapies to the previous levels again as it appears that it was working! Lesions and Masses were shrinking.

To counter the problems with the veins Haley has called in other expert IV starter nurses to help and when she has a line put in for scans etc she asks that it’s left in so she can do an infusion that day. And she had increased back to her twice a week infusions all to kickstart the cancer shrinking process again

But as you can imagine all these treatments cost money and lots of it!

Haley has been told by her GP that she needs to stop working but she can’t as that work is what pays for the alternative treatments now that the original Givealittle donation money has been used. She is getting run down trying to do it all, getting 3 kids ready and off to school and day care, working while they are away, picking them up, getting dinner sorted, house sorted, kids in bed etc. Tony is working his hardest too, putting in extra hours so they have food on the table and a house to live in, but his job is very physical so that makes it hard for him to have energy at the end of the day to help out but he does his very best, especially on nights with her infusions where he his both a dad a nurse.

Despite all this stress and worry our gorgeous Haley is still smiling, dreaming and cooking up her fabulous plans and you don’t hear her complaining even on those horrible tough days.

So we wanted to give you an insight into what it costs to fight Haley’s Stage 4 Metastatic cancer with the addition of alternative therapies and where you’re previous amazing donations have been spent. They helped to fund just short of 6mths treatment for Haley

Haley uses, on Specialist advice, the following things over the course of a month in addition to her conventional treatments and prescription medicines:

    •Homeopathic drops

    •Lipoic Acid

    •Reishi mushroom capsules

    •Magnesium powder

    •Vitamin C infusions

    •Chiropractic care

The costs for these treatments and doctor visits cost Haley and Tony $2900NZD per month on average. Without Haley administering her own IV infusion these costs would be much higher and given the issues with her veins there will come a time that Haley won’t be able to administer herself anymore.

These costs are over and above the cost of living which has increased dramatically here in NZ. Rent, power, fuel, internet, food, daycare, clothing etc all is on top. Given that treatment equates to nearly $35,000NZD a year and the cost of living as a family of 5 is much more than that (they don’t live an extravagant lifestyle) you can imagine that this is a huge burden to them right now that they don’t need. Haley and her doctor have tried unsuccessfully a number of times to apply to WINZ for financial assistance of some sort but do not meet the criteria so have been declined.

Haley and Tony have been blown away by everyone’s support since this journey began in June 2021, but we all want to see these masses shrinking and to do that we need funds to enable these therapies that were so effective prior to her January scan.

So what can you do? Donations of money are always appreciated no matter how big or small the amount is, but also donations of time to help around the house or take a load of Haley and Tony. Do you have a fundraising idea that people could execute? Can you share Haley’s story to raise awareness both for her and other patients in their own fights? Please let us know. Any help no matter what it is will be greatly appreciated.

This has always been a marathon not a sprint and there’s still a long road to go to give Haley, Tony and their family the miracle of remission that they are working for.

  • Surgery day

      29 December 2021

Haley is currently waiting to go in to Surgery at Tauranga Hospital this morning to undergo Ovary removal.

Because of the nature of her Cancer Haley and Tony made the tough decision to forgo the dream of another beautiful baby and remove her ovaries to limit the hormone supply to the Cancer.

This is one step closer to stopping the spread of the Cancer in her body and with her additional treatments like Vit C infusions, getting rid of it for good!

So please keep Haley, Tony and the children in your thoughts and prayers today and as always if you can spare any loose change to help them as she recovers from this operation it would be so appreciated

  • Latest update from Haley

Thank you everyone for your continued support and prayers. It's a busy time of year and we hope you are all keeping well and gearing up for the Holidays.

Haley's mum is now back in Minnesota. She was able to stay for 8 weeks, but had to return home sooner than anticipated due to Covid and the difficulties of international travel. We cherished every moment with "Drama" (as Rhys affectionately called her). Grandma had a blast playing with her grandbabies and getting to know their personalities. She also made a great flatmate, house keeper, chef, chauffeur (after a few dodgy driving lessons from Haley who in her menopausal mind kept getting lefts and rights mixed up), and even a nurse! Yes, that's right, Kathryn learned how to start IVs to help administer Haley's vitamin C infusions at home!

Haley is on the same treatment and has managed to stay well and out of hospital since that last stent of diverticulitis and small bowel obstruction (which was just bad luck and not related to the cancer). Blood work has been good now that they found the right dose of one of her hormone tablets she takes daily. Haley is now on the waiting list to have her ovaries taken out (ovaries produce 80% of estrogren which is feeding the cancer). It is through the public system so might be a few months yet until the actual procedure. Once the ovaries are out she can stop taking the goserelin injection every 4 weeks (it's a hormone implant that goes under the skin in the stomach by means of a HUGE needle, Tony will be glad he won't have to do that anymore). Sometime in the middle of January they will do another CT scan to assess Haley's response to treatment. We continue to pray that they will find more and more shrinkage, and hopefully disappearance, of the tumors; and continue to baffle medical health professionals by this unexpected response. We have faith in God this will happen!!!

Until then, please continue your prayers, support, thoughtful messages, and continue to share this Give A Little page. So far the contributions have helped Haley afford 17 vitamin C infusions (including all the supplies to administer these infusions at home, the infusions take 4-6 hours and she has them twice a week); 4 bottles of mushroom capsules, 3 bottles of homeopathic remedy drops, and multiple alternative medicine doctor appointments; as well as cover the costs associated with mum's visit including MIQ stay. Without all your kind donations they could not have afforded to do all this. The Nienow's are so gracious for everyone God has put in their lives and all the help they have received thus far through this journey.

  • Unexpected hospital stay for Haley but it brings hopeful news

      30 September 2021
    Main image

We’ve been a bit quiet for a few weeks as Haley gets into her new schedule of medications which she’s had to stop then restart at times due to side effects and changes to her blood work leaving her immune compromised(her blood went very wonky this past Friday and once again the palbociclib was stopped). She’s also been busy getting her alternative therapies and Vit C infusions and and can now administer these herself at home with the help of her nurse friends.

Everyone has been so thankful that Kathryn made it through unscathed from Quarantine and could be reunited with everyone and she’s had to jump straight into full care duties probably a bit sooner than everyone expected due to an unexpected hospital stay for Haley.

On Tuesday morning this week Haley woke with extreme abdominal pains, nausea and vomiting. After toughing it out for far too many hours, Tony took her to the ED. After many hours waiting and some updated CT scans of her chest and abdomen she was finally admitted to a ward. It was a worrying time as they waited for the results with wondering if it was being caused by the Cancer.

However the results came back and Haley had developed diverticulitis and had a lot of fluid buildup in her stomach which was the cause of her issues. She has an NG tube that is constantly draining excessive fluid in her stomach from the infection and inflammation going on. That's what's making her really nauseated and so do all the antibiotics they started . She has 2 IV lines, one for IV fluids (gotta put back in what's draining out) and antibiotics, and the other IV line for a PCA (personal controlled analgesia so she can push a button when pain relief is needed between the scheduled pain meds). They finally found a nausea med that works.

They’re saying that she will be in 3-4 nights but we all know Haley and she will be trying to break free early but is very aware of struggling to keep foods down and needing to keep this excess fluid draining out.

The doctors are happy for Haley to continue her alternative treatments including the vitamin c infusions. She must however administer it herself and state the hospital has no responsibility if something goes wrong which she’s more than happy to do.

Its an unfortunate separate incident compounded/complicated because of the cancer but not caused by the Cancer. Great news! But the greatest news of all is that her Oncologist reviewed the updated scans and said good news, the current treatment is working, tumors are shrinking!!! "It's still early days" he says but looking positive.

So this news is just wonderful and has given everyone a boost that things are working and Haley is really kicking Cancers butt right now!

For now it’s get Haley through this infection, get her back to eating and drinking again and to break out and continue everything she has been doing and without all your kind donations this simply wouldn’t be possible due to the large costs and frequencies of therapies needed.

Thank you everyone for the continued thoughts and prayers! Keep em coming!!!!

  • Mums here and Support crew update

      27 August 2021
    Main image

    Hi everyone

Well what a week it’s been for one particular person on this journey. Kathryn (Haley’s mum) has made her way safely from Minnesota to New Zealand (via Chicago/LA/Auckland) and is now safely in quarantine in Christchurch (well away from the Delta outbreak which we are all thankful of). An Application for exemption from quarantine has been made so now we wait to see if it’s approved and how we get her from the South Island up to Haley in the North Island whilst travel between regions remains restricted. This has uplifted spirits hugely to know that she’s so close.

Haley has had her first Vitamin C infusion this week which is meant to boost her immune system and increase her energy levels. She has met with the alternate doctors and got her supplement regime in play now too which is fantastic.

Haley and Tony have set up the support crew website where they can provide a list of their current needs, whether it be food supplies, meals, care, cleaning etc. No matter where you are in the world you can help be a part of this support team for Haley and Tony which is fabulous as we know many of you not in NZ or not physically near them want to also help with day to day things.

Simply create a login on the link below and click on Needs Calendar and that will show the current needs they have and when they need them. If you're in a position to help them click Accept and it will be saved for you and added to calendar and emailed. If you are outside of NZ you can still order things for them by scrolling further down the page to Instant ways to help. There you can send meals, fruit/veg boxes, buy vouchers for supplies etc. it’s going to be a valuable tool in helping them going forward so please be sure to check the site regularly as their needs change.

Despite being in lockdown still Haley’s spirits are high, she’s fighting hard and teaching homeschool like a pro!

As always we are so incredibly blown away and thankful for all the love and support each and every single one of you are providing to Haley, Tony and family and please do continue to share this page so that we can keep funds coming in to support them. Alternative therapies aren’t cheap and this is going to be a marathon for Haley and her family so even if it’s just $1 every few weeks or months that you can spare it will be gratefully accepted and go a long way to help fund what Haley needs to keep fighting this fight for as long as possible xx

  • Update from Haley

      22 August 2021
    Main image

    The battle has begun!

First off, thank you to EVERYONE!!!!

There are too many people to name but special thanks to Steve Brown from Diamond Photography for taking these lovely photos of our family!

And super huge thank you to Shannon Hartley, Sam Clark, Sam Luther, Kat Valois, Mel Butt, and all others working behind the scenes to help manage my life and navigate through websites and arranging support!!!

I’ve been on just hormone treatment for the last 3 weeks (two different tablets and one injection). I’ve been tolerating the side effects as best as possible. The hormones are supposed to suppress estrogren and progesterone hormones that are feeding the cancer, so essentially, I’m going into early menopause.

I have also started alternative therapies (the funds raised so far are a HUGE help for that as it is not cheap). I’ve met with a nutritionist and started on a new diet plan with loads of anti antioxidants and super foods to help kill the cancer. I will also be starting on some other herbal/fungal/alkaline remedies that are not mainstream, but we are trying anything and everything to keep me alive for as long as possible.

I met with an alternative/holistic doctor and will begin vitamin C infusions and possibly ozone therapy next week.

I have an amazing network of friends working worldwide to help me! That includes my dear friend Jan Leise, who is sharing my medical notes with an oncologist at The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for a second medical opinion.

Some of the biggest news is that my mum, Kathryn, has officially been granted a visa to enter NZ and a placement in managed isolation quarantine spot (she’ll have to stay there for 2 weeks once she enters the country 26 August). Shannon and Sam have been working endlessly to accomplish this major feat!

For those of you not living in NZ you may not be aware that the borders to the country have been closed since Covid started 2020, and to make the matters worse we just entered level 4 lockdown this past week (coincidentally the same day we were notified mum got her visa). Here’s a photo of us on one of our Covid lockdown walks

    The plan going forward is:

    1) Continue to pray for me and my family and keep sending us lots of messages, we appreciate them all even if we don’t get a chance to reply to all of them.

    2) I’ll continue the hormone treatment (and all the alternative treatments), get my bloods checked every 2 weeks (I had some bad changes in the last blood test so pray my immune system perks up and my kidney’s stay strong).

    3) I’ll have another MRI/CT scan in the next 2 months to see if any of the treatments are working and praying the cancer has not spread any further. Once we have the scans we’ll then know if chemo, surgery, radiation is still an option. (This was not done when we first found out as the cancer is too aggressive and spreading too quickly).

We have told the children Lauren (7), Rhys (3) and Millie (1), but all we have said to her is that mumma is sick on the inside and will need some extra help and some days she may not be feeling the best.

We are living one day at a time. Tony has been super strong and an amazing dad and husband through all this, we were blessed to be able to celebrate our 11 year wedding anniversary last weekend with a night away. Huge thanks to Karleen Elphick for watching our kids!! That night away was just what we needed to rejuvenate mentally, spiritually and emotionally. That small bit of respite has given me more energy and drive to start training for some events while I still have energy on most days.

I have started training for some marathons and a triathlon (hoping they still go ahead with stupid Covid). I’ve been biking to appointments, running the streets of Pyes Pa (where we live now), and hoping pools open soon so I can get back into the water for my swim training. I am super competitive and thanks to Kat she’s inspired to be keep fit and thinks she can beat me in the triathlon in February 😊 (And has also introduced me to the sport Pickle Ball- like a combination of table tennis and tennis-super fun!).

We are looking forward to mum getting here to help us with daily living tasks and childcare. I have not been back to work since the diagnosis but will be doing some hours at work this week, just simple phone/computer tasks with no patient contact and in my own “work bubble”.

We cannot thank everyone enough for all their love, thoughts, prayers, and generosities!!!! Please keep continuing to share our story with others. We will continue to update on the Give A little Page. We are also using calendar from the NZ Breast Cancer Support Society where we say our needs and someone can sign up to help. We’ll be utilizing it more now that we’re in lockdown. And will provide the link in another update.

Also it’s so lovely to hear that my story has prompted you to get your own screenings. Early screenings and timely Mammograms can make all the difference. Check those boobs ladies and gentlemen

    Haley and family xx

    Hi everyone

We’ve all been blown away by the love and support you have shown to Haley and Tony in the last 24 hours and they’re reading all your messages of support but as you can imagine they have a lot to process right now but they will get back to you all in time and cherish all the love and support.

Now we have made a little poster as we know some of you want to spread the word more.

Maybe it’s a sign on a notice board or in the lunchroom at your work or maybe you know people who may like to donate but don’t know how to navigate the website and aren’t on Socials to get the link. Or maybe you just want to quickly keep in touch when we post updates.

The QR code on this poster is a direct link to Haley’s page. All you have to do is use the camera on your phone to scan the code and it will open the link up. Easy!

So please keep sharing this page near and far so we can try and raise all the funds they need to get through this time as a family

The picture here is very low res but you can get a print ready version by copying and pasting the below link into your web browser

    Thanks so much x

  • Updated diagnosis

      8 August 2021

Sadly this week Haley got the devastating news that the Cancer has spread.

She now has the diagnosis as

Grade 3 Stage 4 breast cancer which has spread to both lungs and liver.

Sadly the cancer in NOT Cureable and treatments are now to stop the spread any further and give Haley more time with her family and loved ones.

Haley has started hormone treatment now Goserelin injections and Tamoxifen and Palbociclib pills. These are to suppress the hormones that are feeding the cancer as Chemotherapy, Radiation and Masectomy now won’t be effective.

Haley is pushing to have her ovaries removed as they supply 80% of estrogen which is what this type of cancer likes. She will have more scans in 3 months and if the drugs are working then they will agree to remove her ovaries. Anyone who knows Haley will know that this decision won’t have been done lightly, but she’s a fighter and this is what fighters do.!

This wasn’t the news that any of us were expecting and as you can imagine it’s devastated all of us and everyone is trying to process this but no one more than Haley, Tony and their family.

It’s even more important to us now to raise funds for any non conventional treatments that will buy Haley time with her loved ones and also to help her tick things of her awesome Bucket list.

So please any amount even $1 will all help our precious Haley in this fight and she is a fighter so let’s give her a helping hand xx
