Supporting Lisa and whānau during cancer treatment and recovery
Hamilton, Waikato
Lisa van Weerden, her long-term partner Shannon and two sons Vincent and Zane, have faced significant challenges in recent years. Shannon suffers from a debilitating back injury, compounded by two unsuccessful spinal surgeries, which has rendered him unable to work and has led to daily struggle with chronic pain.
Lisa, an adult educator dedicated to inspiring the next generation of support workers, received a devastating diagnosis of Cervical Cancer on December 9th 2024. Despite experiencing symptoms from October 18th to November 27th, Lisa's concerns were initially dismissed by two medical professionals, potentially delaying her treatment. Fortunately, a subsequent doctor listened attentively, conducted a thorough examination, and facilitated referrals, ultimately leading to the diagnosis.
Following imaging and consultation with oncologists, Lisa's cancer was staged as 2b. Given the non-operative nature of this stage, radiation and chemotherapy have been recommended as the standard and most effective treatment. Unfortunately, the holiday period has caused further delays in Lisa's treatment, exacerbating the emotional and financial strain on the family.
To optimise her recovery and healing, Lisa wishes to supplement her conventional treatment with complementary therapies (IV Vitamin C, Mistletoe, organic food, ayurvedic medicine and retreats), increasing absence from work.
The family would be deeply grateful for any support and prayers.

Week 8 in India 20 March 2025
So after 6 weekly chemo cycles we have confirmation that my 7cm growth is unable to be felt now and viewing on PET CT scan sees a significant decrease down to about 1cm. This has reduced enough to operate (hysterectomy) and be cured of this disease. The team, myself and my family and friends are very pleased with this outcome. This journey has not been easy for me, I felt all the horrible side effects of chemo and I'm so very glad they are over with. My surgery will take place by the end of next week and I will be due home by the 4th of April. This journey has extended longer than expected so again we thank you for all your support as this would not be possible without all of your kind donations.
