You've helped locals stop a feedlot on a floodplain! Wongan Hills wanted a feedlot in Kaituna Valley, Banks Peninsula. They've withdrawn!
Canterbury
June 6 2023 Update: The applicant has withdrawn his application! We've won!...
If a large cattle feedlot goes ahead, it could pose an unacceptable risk of environmental harm to beautiful Lake Te Waihora and the Kaituna river. We believe this is the wrong farming, in the wrong place, and... update: we've stopped it!
To strongly fight this consent application, we’ll need funds for expert evidence, to counter the flood risk modelling in particular. We believe the thinking is flawed – based on a best-case scenario.
• We’re worried that the area – which already floods regularly – will massively flood in future extreme rainfall events from climate change.
• Thousands of cattle will be living 24/7 on a composting floor for months, if a businessman/farmer gets consent to build four huge feedlot barns here. The industrial complex will hold 2,200 animals, fattening them on a special ‘secret’ feed before slaughter. Why? For luxury wagyu beef, exported at premium prices.
• Serious flooding could carry away volumes of compost bedding, further polluting the Kaituna river and Lake Ellesmere/Te Waihora. Steep surrounding hillsides could slip, and forestry slash from upstream pines is a concern.
• It's predictable that odour, noise, machinery, endless trucks coming and going, and more greenhouse gas emissions will be an issue.
• Overwhelmingly, we hear local Kiwis say: cattle feedlots are not who we are.
We are so grateful to have your support! Thank you!

Decision on your generous surplus donations 29 June 2023
Dear friends,
We want to let you know what’s happening with the donations that you so kindly contributed to our cause.
With your amazing generosity, we ended up with more than enough money to pay the bills from our lawyer and hydrologist.
What to do with the surplus..? One option was to offer the extra donations back, but we also considered using the funds to complete more of the hydrology work, to prepare for something unforeseen.
After much thought, we have decided we want to offer the last group of donors a choice.
If you made a donation to our cause on or after 31 May, (the date on which we had enough to cover our costs) we would like to offer you the choice of a refund or to have your donation passed on to Greenpeace. Givealittle staff have kindly offered to facilitate the refunds for us so please contact Givealittle (helpdesk@givealittle.co.nz) by July 7th if that’s your preferred option.
Please note that if you made a donation before or on 30 May your donation will be used to cover our legal and hydrology expenses, as you intended.
If you have any concerns or questions about your donation and these changes, please contact Givealittle (helpdesk@givealittle.co.nz) by July 7th.
Once again, thank you all so much for your generosity, solidarity and passion! Your donations have supported Little River Eco Collective to oppose feedlots in Kaituna Valley.
With warmest wishes
Andrea and Annelies,
On behalf of Little River Eco Collective
