Help Matty access medical treatment to fight cancer!

$10,060 of $13,000 goal
Given by 139 generous donors in around 3 months

Matty has been let down by the health system and now his only option left is a medicine that is not funded in NZ and costs $6,500 per round.

Wellington

At age 28 our friend Matt was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Initially a small tumour was spotted by a technician, but they failed to alert anyone. It wasn't until a doctor saw the tumour protruding from his neck that Matty was rushed into surgery. Tragically, by this time his condition was critical.

He underwent a “full neck dissection” which resulted in extensive damage to his vocal chords and lymph nodes. But doctors failed to see more cancer during routine scans, and as a result he missed out on life-saving treatment. After being assured by his surgeons that he had time to wait for a third surgery, they have since admitted it's now too late.

New Zealand's health system has let Matty down, and he only has one option left - a RET inhibitor called “Pralsefinib”. However, this treatment is not funded and will cost him $6,500 per month!!

Matt is able to cover the first round, but needs at least two rounds to determine if it will be successful. If it is, he will need to continue the treatment indefinitely.

Our friend is struggling with the enormity of the situation he is facing and wants nothing more than to watch his loved ones thrive, to be an uncle to his nieces and nephews, and to continue making a positive impact on the world around him. But he needs help to make this happen.

Matty has already survived more than his fair share of heavy hits, and we'd really love to be able to take some of the weight out of this one by showing him he is not alone in this fight against cancer.

Carley Ferris' involvement (page creator)

Matty has blessed me with over 20 years of friendship and solidarity. He has been a pillar of support for his loved ones, and has never shied away from helping others.

Supporting Matt to get treatment would mean the world to those of us who love him, too.

Use of funds

This money will be used to pay for a RET-inhibitor that could provide Matty with much-needed time and improve his quality of life. If we cannot get the funds together, Matt will use what we raise on his health needs.

Latest update

Please take care when reading this update.  7 June 2023

Although we knew the reality Matt was facing, I never contemplated that I would have to write such an update... And I can't stress how much I hate writing these words, but our boy has died.

I will post again when I have more information. However, tonight I would like to propose that the money we have raised here be gifted to Matt's whānau to help towards the cost for a funeral.

If anyone objects to using their donation in this way, please email me - there will be no judgement.

Funds will be paid to Matt's EPA, Ava Ferguson.

I wish I could find the appropriate words to convey the gratitude I feel, knowing that Matty was able to experience the kindness he has been shown here. But my heart and my head hurts too much to do any kind of justice tonight...

Thank you for everything... Take care of yourselves and each other, and please reach out if you need support 💗
