Hitolo and her family are survivors, but this disaster has left them homeless, with no money. They are struggling and need help please!
Canterbury
My sister’s name is Hitolo John Vakona and her husband is Adam Vakona. They have 3 children. The two older boys are both totally deaf and the last-born girl is partly deaf.
They live in Hanuabada village, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
In April this year, there was a landslide in the area where they live. Their house has been damaged beyond repair.
The landslide was caused by underground water coming from the hills above plus the fact that there was a lot of rainfall during that time.
They are currently living in a make-shift shelter nearby.
I am Hitolo's older sister. I live in New Zealand.
With the funds raised, the ultimate goal is to help my sister and her family to build a new home. In the meantime, they need decent temporary accommodation and help with basic necessities, like food, clothing, water.
APPRECIATION POST - ETERNALLY GRATEFUL 2 December 2025
Not much has changed for my sister and her family. The authorities are still not forthcoming with the relocation and rebuild of their home. They received some financial help for their day to day living some time last year, but of course, with no money coming in, that money is long gone. In November 2025, they recycled some of the building materials and built another little shack in the same site where they are living to this day. Of course the land is still slipping so it is very dangerous for them to live there.
With the donations received from everyone, friends, family, total strangers, in the new year, 2026, all of us will help them at least start to build a decent home on the land that was given to them by Adam's uncle.
When I first started, I never imagined I would receive the kind of help and support that I have received for my sister and her family in PNG. There are so many in our beautiful country, NZ, who are all deserving of help and support. It is people like you who make this world a better place. Thank you is just not enough, but we say it from the bottom of our hearts. I, myself (Boio) and my sister and her family will be eternally grateful for your kindness and generosity. God will bless you all in more ways than one.
