Pilar is fighting for her life and needs your help. Let's grow a wall-garden of flowers for her to help cover the costs of treatment.
Auckland
This is the story of Pilar: the love of my life and light of my world.
You can follow Pilar's recovery on Facebook, search Pilar's Recovery Page
You may know Pilar as your mother, your sister, your daughter, your aunty or your friend. She may have crossed your path while painting your child's face at a birthday party, or caring your your little one at kindy. Whatever your relationship with this charasmatic, bubbly woman, I know she will have improved your life, been there for you in times of need, and made you laugh when all you wanted to do was cry.
WHAT HAPPENED?
In March 2018, after suffering from chronic back pain for a long time, Pilar was told that an unwelcome house guest had moved in. A monster had made itself at home in her body and set about undertaking extentions by constructing a tumor around her spine. It even went so far as to host a "Diffuse B cell lymphoma" rave party (whithout offering Pilar a tequilla or Kahlua), making it an especially rude and unwanted monster indeed!
TREATMENT
When doctors saw its aggressive behaviour, they began fast-tracking a host of unpleasant tests and started Pilar on a series of chemo treatments that will last for many months. Radiation therapy may also be on the cards but at this stage, we just have to see what results from the methods they've chosen.
Throughout the pain, fear and uncertainty, Pilar has continued to make others laugh; even when her own eyes were brimming with tears. She's rolled up her sleeves and gone in to battle; determined to reclaim her body, health and life.
THE IMPACT
Many of us care deepy for this wonderful, crazy Perunvian-Kiwi woman and I know that - like me - you're probably feeling pretty devastated right about now. Sadly, only Pilar can fight her battles, and she's going to need ALL her energies, focus and mental strength to win.
Our job - as friends and family - is to ease her greatest worries by protecting her kids and helping to reduce the unexpected financial strain.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
If you're wondering what you can do to help brighten Pilar's day and alleviate her stress, we hope this page will gives you a palatable solution:
We know lots of you want to send Pilar flowers, but while undergoing chemo, she is not allowed to receive them due to her immunity being compromised.
So we have made a heap of brightly-coloured cardboard cut-out blooms with crazy smiley faces in the middle. Each $10 donation made through this page will result in one flower being added to Pilar's wall-garden. Your message will be written on the petals so your thoughts and prayers are readily at-hand when she needs encouragement and strength.
For all the littlies that Pilar has cared for over the years, there are 'Busy Bees' available for $5 each, which will have the name of your child written on their backs. They too will be added to the wall-garden in the hope that each Busy Bee will remind Pilar of the cuddles and laughs shared by your child while in her care.
SUGGESTIONS
One Busy Bee/ child $5
One flower $10
A "posey" (5 flowers) $50
A bouquet (10 flowers PLUS one Busy Bee) $100
The lover's bunch (24 flowers and two Busy Bees) $200
The Hive (honey: we LOVE you! So we'll make this a BIG RED HEART that radiates upon all) $300
The Queen Bee! (One big-arsed sexy bee who rules over all manner of naughtiness) $500
THANKS
We hope you like this suggestion we've made and we will post photos of the flowers to this page as the wall-garden begins to flourish and grow. Neither Pilar nor I are the kind of people who have ever gone cap-in-hand, and we don't want to be forced into that position because some unwanted monster has invaded our lives.
From our family to yours, we thank you in advance for your kindness, thoughts and prayers as Pilar embarks on her journey to recovery and good health.

The road ahead is going to be tough, while the doctors look after Pilar and we travel this journey we will have many hurdles to overcome, one of these is a financial one
The money raised by donating flowers and Busy Bees to Pilar's wall-garden will be used to help cover the costs of treatment and the everyday bills that continue to arrive.
