Meet Bertie Bear, he is a 6mo Devon Rex and the cutest little cat with a heart of gold!
Bertie was diagnosed with Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) which has historically been a death sentence for all cats. The same virus that claimed the life of Louie IV in May this year. It is a horrible disease and watching their little bodies turn on themselves and fade away is totally heartbreaking.
FIP is a mutation of the coronavirus, a virus that most cats are exposed to at some point in their lives. In 5-10% of cats exposed to the coronavirus, FIP occurs as a result of a mutation of this virus in the body and is shown through two forms - wet or dry. It can show up at anytime in a cat’s life. Bertie has the wet form - this means his abdomen is filling with fluid, he is losing weight rapidly, and his body is slowly deteriorating.
There is a cure, a drug only available from overseas. It is very expensive. I would like to give Bertie a chance, he has the backing of two very special vets in his life who would love to see this disease beaten as much as I would.
I would also love to be able to share the results with the FIP research team in Australia who are working hard to find and license a cure.
Anything you can donate to help would mean the world to me. I'm struggling knowing there is a treatment out there with a high success rate and it just comes down to money :( I wouldn't wish this disease on any cat mum and would love to be able to help get this drug licensed as it should be. I wish I had known about it before it was too late for Louie IV, and now I'm willing to do everything in my power to give Bertie a chance.
Thanks guys, love Jilly & Bertie Bear xxxx
The funds will go towards Bertie's medication (GS-441524), he needs 84 days of injections. Should the treatment not be successful, I will donate any surplus to the research of this wicked disease.
Half way through observation! 30 November 2020
Day 42/84!
We are half way through observation! So far so good! He has put on weight and is eating like a horse! Climbing trees is a new favourite activity and hiding in the grass watching the flies and birds keeps him entertained for hours ❤️
He is suffering from anxiety though and his skin is still super itchy (que the 2 wake up calls in the night!!). We are trying various remedy’s from Vicki and will keep you posted.
He has outgrown his shirts but the lovely Angela is sending more! He has to wear them for his skin at the moment.
Today is the last say for his fundraiser, if you feel like helping push for our target that would be amazing 🤩 I’m hopeful we won’t need it again 🤞🏻 Thank you from the bottom of my heart 🥰 xx
