Jack didn't die from mental illness. He died from a broken system
Tuakau, Auckland
Our Vision: What Your Support Will Help Build – $110,000 Goal
Koru S.O.S. Trust is building a whānau-led, trauma-informed crisis response in Tuakau to fill the gaps left by mainstream mental health and GP services.
Our kaupapa: Heal the root causes of trauma before crisis hits.
Stage 1: Text-based chatbot – $5,000
Stage 2: Voice-activated whānau AI – $10,000
Stage 3: 7-bedroom hub for care and recovery – $10,000
Stage 4: 24/7 mobile crisis response van – $85,000+
Why This Matters:
• 617 suspected suicides in 2023/24 – double the road toll
• Māori men 19–44 are most at risk
• Ron Paterson’s 2017 report called for peer-led, culturally grounded community care—but was ignored.
My son Jack was one of those lives.
We are now posting a petition to Parliament to demand the changes still not delivered. The system is taking lives—not saving them.
Let’s give our men their mana back. Let’s build what the system hasn’t. Join us, sign, and share.
Together, we can save lives and restore futures.
With aroha,
Lisa Hawkeswood

Help Us Fight for Safer Mental Health Discharge – Because Lives Are Still Being Lost
In Aotearoa, more people die by suicide than in car accidents – and the system meant to protect them is still broken.
Funds raised will go toward tech-based AI and chatbot systems, a care and recovery facility, and a crisis response vehicle. If we don’t reach our full goal, we’ll direct the funds toward building Tok Tok homeless shelters to provide safe and stable housing.
