Help Wairarapa whānau prototype building affordable healthy housing

Help us buy a CNC Router so we can prototype building warm, dry whare for our whānau in Wairarapa.

Wellington

The Kia Hanga pou is part of our Te Whare Hangahanga project. Our goal is to establish a whare that would house a CNC router in Wairarapa (CNC stands for computer numerical control). The router is an automated, computer-controlled machine that uses a cutting bit (like a drill) to cut parts out of plywood. It allows the creation of almost any shape, including house parts! You can create designs with computer software and then the CNC router will cut them out precisely.

The opportunities for our people with this type of technology are unlimited. There are already open source projects in the world that provide the designs and templates to create houses (WikiHouse) and furniture (OpenDesk). The CNC router unlocks that ability.

This kia hanga pou proposal requires a CNC router to allow us to cut full size sheets of plywood (2400mm x 1200mm) and gives us the opportunity to manufacture our own housing (even the furniture). We have already created a 1/6th scale prototype MicroHouse based on a design by WikiHouse (pictured). Purchasing this CNC router will enable our whānau to build a prototype full scale whare.

If this build is successful our aim is to use this technology to progressively replace kaumātua housing.

We want to ensure we build sustainable, off-grid houses that are warm, dry and insulated, at a price of less than $75k. This kaupapa not only allows us to use digital technologies but to effect change in our physical environment. It will ensure we can provide autonomy to our whānau and generations to come.

We are looking to raise $32,004 which is the cost of the CNC router alone (including GST). All funds raised will go towards the purchase of a CNC Router within the Wairarapa region. Any funds raised above the purchase price will go towards the delivery of the machine ($2k+) purchasing plywood for the project (potentially up to $25k). With your help, we can build the first full-size whare prototype.

About us

Our mission is that whānau are connected, inspired and empowered to share opportunities to thrive and lead in Te Ao.

Use of funds

The funds will be spent on purchasing a CNC Router. If additional funds are collected they will be contributed to the plywood, people and other costs to build our prototype whare out.

Latest update - October 2021  24 October 2021

So with COVID and delays on the ship we have had to wait a long time for our CNC Machine to arrive. Well fingers crossed, tomorrow our CNC Machine should be arriving into port at Auckland Harbour. It's a very exciting time for our whānau who are hurriedly waiting for the machine (pictured) to get to Wairarapa. We've been told it should be here in Wairarapa by late next week.

We were lining up a place to house the machine within on the main streets of Carterton, but due to some things outside of our control that has not happened. So some last minute warehouse viewing in the weekend and we have managed to find a place. We haven't signed any contracts yet but it's looking pretty promising. It's been a bit stressful having to find a place at short notice, it will cost us however the size of the warehouse means that we will be able to build our prototype whare inside the warehouse. Meaning that we won't be hindered by weather elements.

We will need to do some electrical work to extend out the 3 phase power we do need for the machine. We also need to find funds for lease costs and for the materials required to build the prototype whare. We're furiously writing funding applications to see if we can get some funds from other organisations to assist us. But all of these steps is moving in the right direction.

One of the things we do hope to do is to livestream the building of the prototype whare. We will be sending details out to all those that have donated to this cause so you can follow along the process from home too.

So we want to thank you from our whānau for all of your koha, sharing and kōrero.

Much love,

Amber Craig on behalf of Te Rua o Mahara Wairarapa and the Wairarapa whānau. <3
