Wayne needs life saving treatment. He has so much fight in him. Help us, help him make that fight.
Whangarei, Northland
Two weeks ago, a hospital visit for worsening abdominal pain brought news for our dear Wayne and his family that nobody wanted to hear. The lymphoma he overcame 5 years ago is back, and aggressive.
His daughter Corrinne travelled from Auckland and pushed for answers. Scans showed a large abdominal mass, with cancer in his intestines, liver, spleen, chest and lungs. In 2014 he beat Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma with chemo, radiation and major spinal surgery. It returned in his bowel in 2021 and he beat it again, through surgery, more chemo and a stem cell transplant. Twice he's fought back, and he will again.
His specialists believe CAR T-cell therapy is Wayne's best curative option, but the NZ trial pathway can't move fast enough for this. He has started chemo here straight away while treatment overseas is being arranged, with family in constant contact with hospitals in Shanghai. Estimated treatment costs are expected to begin around $500,000 NZD, not incl flights, accommodation, ongoing medical costs, specialist consultations, medications, complications or extended hospital stays.
Funds raised will go toward CAR-T treatment, hospital costs, flights, accommodation and ongoing medical support for Wayne and his family. Wayne is Dad to five, partner to Ruth, and grandfather to four adoring grandchildren. He's giving this everything he has.
If you are unable to donate, we completely understand, but we ask that you please share Wayne’s story and keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
My daughter and Wayne and Ruth's daughter met in Kindy.
Since then, we have been besties.
They are true friends who always stay in your life.

💙 A quick update on Dad’s journey 💙 29 May 2026
It’s been a busy and emotional week for our family, but we’re finally starting to get over some hurdles.
Unfortunately, a delay with travel documentation meant we were unable to fly out last weekend as planned. While it was incredibly disappointing at the time, we’ve spent the week working through everything needed to get Dad’s treatment journey back on track.
The good news is that we are now almost ready to go and are aiming to fly to Shanghai next Saturday, where Dad will begin the next stage of his treatment journey.
In the meantime, Dad has started additional chemotherapy here in New Zealand to help keep the lymphoma under control while we finalise the last few pieces of paperwork and travel arrangements. Despite everything, he continues to face each day with determination and strength.
This journey has certainly had its ups and downs, but we are feeling positive that we are getting closer to the treatment we have been fighting so hard to access.
To everyone who has donated, shared our story, sent messages, checked in, or simply kept Dad in your thoughts - thank you. The support from our community has helped carry us through some very difficult days.
We are hopeful, determined, and doing everything we can to get Dad to Shanghai as quickly as possible.
We are hopeful that the next update will be from Shanghai. Thank you for continuing to walk this journey with us.
