Recovering 89 year grandma robbed of sentimental jewellery and Christmas $$ while in hospital
Wellington
While 89 yr old Mrs Chung lay in her hospital bed, a few hours after major surgery for a broken femur . . . opportunistic thieves stole a handbag from her bedside. The bag contained precious earrings and a wedding ring given to her by her late husband more than 60 years ago. Mrs Chung's family from France had visited for Christmas and given her several thousand dollars to help with house repairs. The money was quickly put into the handbag when Mrs Chung was rushed to hospital by ambulance. Her jewellery had to be taken off for surgery and also ended up in the handbag . . . along with all the house keys and her daughter's car keys. The locksmith's bills to re-key the house locks and make a new set of keys for the car, on a Public Holiday, added a further $500 to the elderly pensioner's losses. This has been a VERY BAD start to her 90th year. Anything you could do to help would be greatly appreciated.
I am Mrs Chung's son-in-law and my wife, sister-in-law and I have been at mum's bedside throughout the past few days.
My wife and I are both retired and living on superannuation. While this gives me plenty of time to help in practical ways, we simply do not have financial resources to replace the things that were taken . . . unfortunately Mrs Chung had no house and contents insurance!
Grandma making steady progress . . . 12 January 2016
Thanks so much for the donations and prayers for Mrs Chung's recovery. After surviving a 3-4 hr operation to pin and bolt her femur back together, she has been making steady progress. Not surprisingly, she is still NOT very steady on the feet and she gets easily exhausted by trips to the bathroom etc. The family is determined to make her home as functional and 'user friendly' as possible. Our goal is now to raise $1,500 to fund an 'adjustable height bed' . . . plus funding to try to create a level-access walk-in (or wheel-in) shower and toilet. Unfortunately, we have been informed that their is no Government assistance available for these things. But onward and upward, we will continue to try and find a way to ensure that she is as fully supported as possible . The LESS good news . . . no progress on identifying the thieves who stole her money and earrings from her hospital bedside table following her operation!
