Helping my father overcome his mental health and addiction issues through a journey of hope.
Wellington, Kapiti Coast District
Hi, my name is Valera. My Mother and I are raising money for my father, below is his story:
Hīkoi of Hope: My Walk Towards Healing and Change.
Kia ora, my name is Josh I just turned 46. I’ve spent 30 years battling alcohol addiction. Despite working in mental health, disability, and peer youth services, my struggles remain unresolved. Recently, I had to step down from my job at a bakery due to my mental health challenges needing to find a path of healing.
My wife left Russia for a better life, and we have built a loving family. Even with her support and her studies in mental health and addiction, I haven’t been able to overcome my mental health and addiction issues. Rehab costs are out of reach starting from approximately $25,000 for four weeks, so instead we as a family came up with an idea: Hīkoi of Hope.
This journey will take me into New Zealand’s wilderness, where I’ll seek peace, clarity, and healing. I plan to stay in two remote huts on the South Island, spending time in nature and possibly volunteering in conservation efforts. My goal is to reconnect with myself and share my experiences to raise awareness about addiction and mental health challenges.
I’m reaching out for support to cover the basic costs of food, warm clothing, camping gear, and transport like bus tickets. Your contributions will help make this journey possible and bring hope to others facing similar battles. Any support, through donations or sharing this page, would mean the world.
Ngā mihi nui

Josh is my stepfather who I have lived with for 8 years. He's taught me lots of hands-on skills, lawn-mowing, coffee-making, and gardening, which perfectly helps me who likes to learn online and skills that use your brain, not your body.
All the money will go towards my father's journey of hope and recovery, sharing his experience of addiction and mental health (basic costs of food, warm clothing, camping gear, and transport like bus tickets) If there is more money than needed, the excess will go back towards other people's needs on Givealittle.
A big thank you from us at hikoi of hope. 9 October 2024
A heartfelt thank you to all my family, friends, and kind individuals helping. You are making the world a more positive space.
We've got a way to go before we can complete the financial side. But your support has massively helped.
It'll be a challenging journey for my father, but we know he can do it.
Please read the link below. we've been interviewed and featured in the NZHerald which has been posted NATIONALLY.
We'd like to give a big shoutout to everyone who has donated to the Givealittle page.
And then first and foremost we'd like to say a giant thank you Hunting & Fishing for being the first to donate various clothing.
Then a giant thank you to Grace Odlum from NZME (New Zealand Media & Entertainment.).
And to Boat City for also donating towards Josh's hikoi...
It's a nice feeling to come together to help when it matters.
Stay healthy, stay strong. And once again, nga mihi nui. Big thank you.
