Please help our best mate Karl Hancock as he continues his battle to overcome Metastasised Bowel Cancer

Auckland

Hi, firstly a massive thank you to all of those who donated to the GiveaLittle page we had up in 2015-16. In total we raised around $10,000 and it is still sitting safely in a Savings account – waiting for a rainy day. Unfortunately the rainy day has come – and the rain is a bit harder and more expensive than we thought. I have managed to battle through two surgeries (liver and lungs to remove tumours first and then bowel and liver to remove main tumour plus two more tumours that popped up in the liver) plus 16 rounds of chemotherapy over the last two years. Despite all of this, five more tumours are currently residing in my liver and I would like to forcibly “evict” them. So the plan going forward is to undertake a treatment regime known as “SIRT” – simply explained as a radioactive bomb that is injected into my liver to hopefully blow the nasties to smithereens! Unfortunately this treatment is not covered by the public system or health insurance – with an approximate cost of $35,000. So we are back on the fundraising bandwagon to try and get your help in making this treatment affordable. The goal with the fundraising is to make sure that Maria, Talia and Anya are financially secure in the long term and we do not end up too in debt from the treatment plan going forward. This is probably my biggest concern; as a husband and father it is my job to provide for the family and make sure in the long run they are safe and secure and can stay. So this is where I need your help!!!

This time around we are planning a number of different “events” that we would love you to be a part of.

Firstly, there is this GiveaLittle page – any and all donations are greatly appreciated and will go a long way to reducing the cost of the treatment.

We are also planning an Online Auction and over the coming months we will be sending out a link to this, where there will be lots of goodies for you to bid on. If you have anything that you would be keen to donate to the Online Auction please let us know and we can then put it up on the website for the highest bidder to snap up!

Lastly we are having a “Party in the (Bell) Park” with Nice ‘n Urlich’s Bevan Keys on the DJ decks. This is being planned for the end of April with more information re date, venue, tickets etc. We will be selling beverages of the alcoholic variety at the party.

The funds from the Silent Auction and the Party in the Park will go along way to helping pay for my upcoming treatment. Plus it means everyone can have a bit of fun while we try to raise funds!

Remember, your kind donations are not just for me – although it is part of my grand plan to live to a ripe old age. It is also for Maria, Talia and Anya, and making sure they are safe, secure and financially sound long term. As Edmund Hillary said (sort of) “Lets knock this bastard off!”

Thanks from Maria and Girls  13 October 2017

To all the generous individuals, family and friends who have donated to Karl’s give a little page, words are not enough to truly express my appreciation and gratefulness that I am feeling. I’m truly blessed and humbled by the heartfelt donations, messages, love and kindness you have all shown for our wee whanau/aiga/family.

Karl was a true warrior who fought a great battle and we both were praying and hopeful for our miracle story. But in the end Karl showed great courage and accepted the inevitable. Karl was always so very strong in body, mind, spirit and this shone through especially when he was diagnosed with cancer two years ago. He was always a fighter and would not let cancer define him. He fought to the bitter end.

Karl’s strength and courage, I will definitely draw on to take one day at a time and to put one foot in front of the other especially for our two beautiful girls. This will be his legacy which I will continue to pass on to Talia and Anya “that their dad was big, strong and had a fighting spirit.

Karl and I had 17 amazing years together and what I will treasure most from these beautiful years is his strength, courage, wisdom and dry sense of humour. He was a great provider for our family, a wonderful dad to his girls and a most loving husband to me. The girls and I will miss him so very much and his memory will live in our hearts forever.

I am so overwhelmed by all your generous donations and on behalf of myself, Talia and Anya thank-you. In my Samoan culture, we express our love and gratitude by saying Fa’afetai, Fa’afetai, Fa’afetai Tele Lava which translate to Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you so very much. God bless you all.

With love Maria, Talia and Anya Hancock
