Help Save Pinky

$2,515 of $13,000 goal

Pinky needs life saving operations after being hit by a car. She is a very special member of our family and we never give up on family.

Nationwide

On monday night Pinky was hit by a car when the lights were out on our street rendering it pitch black. She suffered very critical injuries. Her diaphragm blew out which caused all her internal organs to move out of where they should be and up into her chest cavity where they were crushing her lungs. Her right hip was dislocated, her pelvis and spine fractured. Her left paw was badly crushed and she lost most of the skin and fur that covered the tendons and bone. Her foot bones suffered multiple fractures and overall the paw was critically injured.

Pinky is a fighter. She never gives up and we wont give up on her. After she was hit outside our house she dragged herself down the outside stairs, through the cat flap and right through our house until she reached our bedroom where she had no more energy and lay to wait. We know this because as she had no use of her back paws at all she left a bloody trail of her last movements. When we got home from swimming Sabri found her in our room and we raced her into the after hours vets in Mt Albert. The longest drive of our lives while she struggled to breathe, her body hanging limp in my arms. As soon as the nurse saw her she took her from me and ran. We waited.

We were given the option of euthanising her or taking the long road of multiple surgeries to attempt to save her life. For us there was no option. We would try every thing we could to save her life, she had already shown us she was willing to fight.

On Tuesday morning after making it through a long, long night of the vet team stabilising her she went in for the first surgery. She had her diaphragm repaired which moved her internal organs back to where they were. She did exceptionally well and although had to be on very strong pain killers and antibiotics she pulled through.

Wednesday and Thursday we waited, it was a matter of seeing how she did, if she managed to heal from such intense surgery and would be ready to tackle her other injuries.

Friday she went in for her hip and paw repair. After three days of thinking she would loose her paw we had the wonderful news that she could feel her toes being touched and there was live tissue in her foot. The vets pulled a lot of gravel and dirt out of the wound. We decided that we would attempt to save her paw. She had her right hip secured back into place which is a big enough operation on its own. Then she had two of her toes removed, as much dead tissue stripped away as possible and the whole leg strapped up and bandaged to hopefully heal. But she lost a lot of blood and ran into complications quite quickly after the surgery. We raced her sister Tiger into the vet clinic to provide a blood transfusion. We are lucky we have her littler mate and sister Tiger, as Pinky came from Dubai it would be hard to find a match for blood. Tiger was a perfect match as they share the same DNA. The blood transfusion went well and both Pinky and Tiger recovered well. Pinky is now today, Saturday, stable. We will see over the next few days how she recovers. Her journey is not over yet. She has a month in a crate and constant vet care to come. She still may need a few more operations yet to live a happy comfortable life but we will not give up!

One of our dear friends Katie suggested that people may like to contribute to her care. We have four cats, they are part of our family but we couldn't afford the payments for insurance for them. We are now facing vet bills of so far $13,000 and increasing daily. We will be paying these off for a long time. We are happy to do this and its the least we can do to save the life of our special little lady. But if you have a few spare dollars laying around or are moved by her story and want to help we all would be eternally grateful. It doesn't have to be much and just a message of support would be wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to read Pinkys story so far.

Update for 14/10/2014  14 October 2014

Guess who's coming home tomorrow!!!!!! Pinky!!!!! She is doing so well after her leg amputation that she has been approved to go home tomorrow! She is eating on her own and attempting to walk. She's able to do her toileting on her own. She is a real little trooper and we are incredibly proud of her!!!!! A HUGE HUGE thank you for everyone thats supported her through this insane and long journey. Most people I talk to (even vets) are AMAZED she even made it with so many injuries. I haven't asked lately what her bills are up to but last time I checked it was close to 14k. Mind boggling amount of money but it brought her back from the very brink of death so to us its just part of life. We are so humbled and overwhelmed by the support people have given financially, THANK YOU!!!!! Thank you to everyone that has helped it means so very much to us and to her! I hope Pinky's accident has highlighted the need for insurance - especially good insurance for even a few people out there. I learnt on the weekend that 60% of people faced with a vets bill of $700 or more will choose to euthanise! That was never an option for us, if Pink was ready to fight then we would fight alongside her. Now we can bring her home and focus on getting full use of her remaining leg. We are very excited to have her back home and hopefully back to sleeping in her favourite spot, right on top of the baby growing in my tummy (Im pretty sure she thinks its her baby) I will continue to update you all on her progress at home. Much Love, Danella, Sabri and the meows.
