Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Adelaide the first stepping stones to international cycling career for a rider who loves the sport
Nationwide
This fundraising is for my daughter Ione Johnson, a 16 year old Year 12 student at Wellington Girls College; she is a member of the NZ team for the upcoming Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Adelaide. This is a self-funded trip, even though selection is based on results; the total cost is $4,400. To date Ione has raised $2,000 dollars towards this event and would like to aim for another $1,000 to help her on her way.
Ione has been selected for the NZ Junior Road Development Squad for the past 3 years, she has already represented NZ at the 2014 Road Oceania Championships and now gained selection for the 2015 Oceania Track Cycling Champs. Ione’s first introduction to bike racing was on the Wellington velodrome, looking back at that first ride Ione knew she had found her thing, as she says “That first day I fell in love with the sport and wanted to be the best I could”, she has been striving and working very hard towards her goal. These are the first steps to achieve her goals of racing in the Junior World Championships and competing internationally.
The Oceania Track Champs campaign starts with a week training camp in Cambridge from the 14th of September, with her first International level track event on the 18th through 20 to of September. On the first of October the team travels to Adelaide, with racing on the 8th through 11th of Ocotber.
Update for 13/10/2014 13 October 2014
The Championships are now over, and after 4 long hard days of racing, the NZ team came away with a quite a few medals, and Ione was one of the medalists. On the last evening Ione won Silver in the Womed Under 19 Points race. I am super exicted for her, so now it is onwards to National Champs and hard training aiming for Junior World champs in Astana Khazakstan August 2015
