Jed the Greyhound attacked by Labradors

Please help us fund another operation and rehabilitation for our lovely greyhound.

Hawke's Bay

Our lovely, gentle greyhound Jed was attacked by 3 Labradors in April 2019. He was on lead and they were off lead. The dogs managed to corner Jed and punctured his right rump and broke his leg. He has had an operation to mend the broken leg and hydrotherapy and physiotherapy but this has been unsuccessful and he now needs another operation to correct the leg which will cost around $4500, not including any rehabilitation he will require. He is on constant pain medication and can no longer walk far before the pain gets to him. We are also still waiting on the results of a CT scan to find out if there is any damage to his hip as he is also suffering pain here.

The owners of the dogs, who coincidently breed them, agreed to help pay for a small proportion of his costs, before sending an email to say they believed they had contributed enough. I reported the dogs to our local dog control but as the owners live rurally, they are only required to wear a muzzle and be on leads when out. This has been extremely upsetting and we feel they have got away very lightly while we are still paying for someone else's poor decisions.

So far we have paid around $6600 for his rehabilitation and the dog owners have paid about $1617. The operation to fix his leg was undertaken by the vet that the dog owner works for so we are unaware of this cost. We are a hard working family with two teenage children and at this stage our only option, due to the costs to fix his leg, is to amputate. We are very upset that this is really our only option but to pay for another round of expensive surgery and rehabilitation is not viable for us.

We are asking kind, dog-loving donors to give just a little to help us possibly avoid having to resort to amputation of his leg. Jed is a major part of our family and it has broken my heart to see how much pain and trauma he has been put through in the last year. If in the event we are able to raise more funds than necessary, I will pass them on to the next person who may have a similar plight.

Use of funds

Second operation to fix malunion of bones in his leg.

Rehabilitation to ensure he regains as much mobility as possible.

To help us pay off the debts we have incurred so far.

Surplus funds will be passed onto others on this site with a similar plight.

Jed on the Mend  20 July 2020

Jed had an amputation two weeks ago and is doing well. He was looked after so well by the vet's and nurses in Auckland and then spent a week with good friends before we could bring him home. He is walking well and I will get a video of him moving and post it soon. In the meantime here is a video of a pain free Jed. Thanks once again for all the donations. Your support has helped us finance his operation and allowed him to get on with his doggy life!
