Kiwis Helping to Power Madagascar Hospital

$320 of $80,000 goal
Given by 4 generous donors in 5 days

Help bring reliable solar power to Mandritsara Hospital, supporting doctors, nurses and patients who need power they can count on.

Rangiora, Canterbury

Mandritsara is a long way from NZ, but this project is not just an idea from afar. We’ve been there before. We’ve travelled the rough roads, worked on the roofs, met the local team and seen first-hand why reliable power matters.

Friends of Madagascar Trust NZ and Sunergy Solar are heading back to Madagascar to help power a hospital complex serving a population of about 300,000.

The hospital has been built up over many years through dedication, generosity and hands-on work. But one essential thing is still missing: dependable electricity. The local power supply is unreliable, expensive, diesel-based and poor quality. At times diesel can be hard to get for weeks or months, and power surges can damage vital equipment.

This year’s mission is to help install a much larger solar system, with batteries, so the hospital can run on clean, reliable, independent power. That means doctors, nurses, patients and families can rely on the basics we often take for granted: lights, medical equipment, communications and safe day-to-day operation.

We are raising $80,000. Half will help get five practical, skilled people to Mandritsara and cover travel and accommodation, so they can focus on doing the job well rather than self-funding the trip. The other half will go toward equipment for this year’s project, including solar, electrical and communications gear.

This is a return to a place and people we care deeply about, with practical help that will last.

About us

Friends of Madagascar Trust is a Canterbury-based charity working to improve quality of life for the people of Mandritsara. Access to medicine and reliable communication are vital for a healthy, safe community, and this is where we can make a difference

Use of funds

Funds will cover two essentials: $40,000 for travel and accommodation for five team members to reach Mandritsara, and $40,000 for solar, electrical and communications equipment. If we fall short, we’ll prioritise the most urgent project costs.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
