Lads running Rotorua Marathon to help raise money for Gisborne / Wairoa flood victims

Bay of Plenty

James Crosswell and Hemi Mather (The Lads) are running the Rotorua Marathon to raise funds for the people of Gisborne / Wairoa who were affected by severe flooding, due to Cyclone Gabrielle, earlier in 2023.

The Gisborne and Wairoa regions are close neighbours to Opotiki, where James is from, so it feels right to be able to raise money to help get the people of Gisborne / Wairoa back on their feet again, after such destruction and devastation they have suffered... Or at least help.

Hemi is James' son-in-law, and this will be his first ever marathon. It will be James' 46th Rotorua Marathon. In 2019 James suffered a major heart attack, which required surgery and the fitting of a Pace Maker. So the fact he is still running after that ordeal, is quite incredible. He says that running keeps him fit, and keeps him young.

James (73), is currently President of the Opotiki Lions Club (who are collecting funds) and is also a foundation member of the Rotorua Marathon Survivor's Club - an elite club of athletes who have run 15+ Rotorua Marathons. James is a local Plumber in Opotiki, he is a loving Husband, Father of 3 and Poppy of 7.

Hemi (38), is a Security Technician and Electrician, loving Husband and Father of 3, who enjoys playing soccer and keep fit. He was born in Wellington and is an ex-Army soldier.

All funds raised will go directly to Gisborne / Wairoa Lions Clubs to donate to those in need.

Thank you in advance for all of your support. All the best for your Marathon lads!!

Thank you all for your support for our cause, and for our run! These funds we have raised will be transferred to the Opotiki Lions Club (James is the President) and given to Lions Clubs in the areas of Gisborne and Wairoa to pass on to those victims badly affected by the terrible flooding from Cyclone Gabrielle.

Cheers,

The Lads
