Lani does everything for our communities, yet she is having to organise without a laptop! Let's end this state of laptoplessness today!
Wellington
Leilani A. Visesio is a key operator in both Kava Club and the Concerned Citizens Collective. Through these and other organisations, as well as on her own, she has over the years run sooo many grassroots-based, uplift & develop events for Pasifika & Maori, activist and LGBTTIQ communities. Too many to even count!
All those chop suey hui, celebrating Oceanic creatives in a fiercely nurturing by-the-people-for-the-people way; with that organisational commitment to consensus and consent; with that mean cooking skill for coconut buns and sapa sui that she has also handed on to others (legacy!); with that outlook of inclusion and discussion and actually quite a LOT of compassion for well-intentioned bunglers (I've noticed); through the DJ sets both on community radio and at community gigs; to the recent guest edit of Fightback magazine ... these are just a few traces of Lani's contribution to other people's wellbeing.
A few years ago, Lani's laptop died. She had a tablet for a while but that too has been dying and then dead for months now. At the time of writing, she was organising her DJ set for the Newtown Festival's Living Wage Stage by using the computers at an internet cafe.
Lani's doing some part-time study to further the mega-skills she already has in community development, so this situation with the laptoplessness is totes unhelpful, and not really sustainable in these modern urban times.
I told her we could all rally round and chip in to get her a new one, and she had a lmao at that but was not opposed to the idea, if it can happen.
If you can't donate but want to help, please share this page to ppl whom you know know Lani. I'm not on facebook so that would help a lot.
Fa'afetai tele lava & arohanui to everyone for reading.
Lani is my friend. She's done heaps for me and for people I care about. Even as I type she's organising my girlfriend's 40th birthday because I'm too shambolic to get it done lol. What's more, I know many other folk will feel their own sense of gratitude towards Lani, so this is a way of giving back something real, & real useful.
Funds raised will be handed over to Lani so she can buy the laptop of her choice. She has indicated she'd like the one in the link (top right of this page) because it has a pen. I have set the funding goal a little higher than the laptop price so we can throw in an external optical drive (CD/DVD player) to help with multimedia projects, and/or an external keyboard which is also not included.
That'll be one laptop, coming right UP. 16 March 2017
We did it! Yes we can! We did it! Yes we can!
So the Laptop 4 Lani appeal closed about 45 minutes ago with a total of $1,700 raised.
A few days back, the goalposts shifted in completely the RIGHT direction and Leilani's laptop of choice went on sale again, in a really big way.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (pictured), with a pen and a decent amount of memory at 256GB, and 8GB RAM, is now on special for $1,598.99 OH YEAH.
That leaves about $100 to spare for Lani to get an external keyboard and maybe a few other useful trinkets, like a CD/DVD drive or a USB hub for this one-port machine... Who knows, but it will be money well spent in decorating this most essential of things....
A LAPTOP 4 LANI.
Thank you so much loving whanau; I think this means quite a lot because it's more than just getting someone a new tech tool, it's also everyone sending a bit of aroha to Lani and tautoko for her ongoing work. Like ON THE RECORD kinda thing. So thanks and double thanks!
May your weekend be beautiful and easy.
