Auckland

If you are a friend of Susanne Fisher, you would know that she is Danish and has lived in NZ for the last 16 years. She settled here with her then husband, Kiwi Cameron Fisher and their two children Isabella and Benjamin - who were both born in Denmark.

Traumatically for the family, Benjamin was diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin Lymphoma - stage 1) when he was just 12 years old. He went through six months of chemotherapy and radiotherapy with a positive mindset and the disease went into remission. Through his high school years he remained healthy and got the five-year cancer-free tick at the age of 17.

A year later, after finishing his schooling, he moved from New Zealand to Prague in the Czech Republic for love and adventure. A couple of months ago, in August 2018, he moved to Denmark to be close to his Danish family and to start a new stage in his life as a university student.

However, within four weeks of his arrival, Ben was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma - stage 4. His treatment at this stage is six months of intensive chemo. He needs this aggressive treatment as the cancer is metastatic - which means it is in many parts of his body.

Now 20 years old, Ben is approaching this latest health setback with the same positive mindset that served him so well first time around.

Ben’s family are grateful that Denmark has a top quality free medical system for Danish citizens/residents. This means he has medical and family support but no income as he is only entitled to limited government support in Denmark, having not worked there.

Financial support raised by this Give A Little page will help Benjamin with his living costs and unsupported treatments.

Whether you are friends of Susanne, Cameron or Ben please Give A Little to support Ben - he is on a huge journey to beat cancer again and needs our help.

Leanne Dean's involvement (page creator)

Benjamin has been friends with my son, Ziggy, since primary school – that’s how I met his parents. As family friends we saw how bravely Ben fought his cancer first time around and we rejoiced with his family when he was given the ‘all clear’ just a few short years ago. Now the cancer is back and Ben needs our support to enable him to focus on his health through this challenging time.

Use of funds

The funds will help with living, travel and paid support services during and after his treatment.

An update from Benjamin as at 24/11/18  24 November 2018

Hi All, I want to say a big thank you to Leanne for the hard work of setting this up, and a big thank you to everyone that has been able to donate and support me through this time. I can’t put in words how much I appreciate you all. I want to let you all know that the money is helping me afford some of the unsubsidised medicines; it’s going towards keeping me entertained for when I have the energy to do stuff. The amount raised is a lot more than expected so there is plenty left over after these expenses (again big thank you!!!!), so it will be going towards some travelling so I can have a couple good months to look forward to, after several worse than average months.

As for an update on my health, I’ve been having chemo (RCHOP-14) every fortnight since September, which has given me some ups and downs. Generally it’s been going pretty smoothly. I had a PET scan a couple of weeks ago, where I got results back the following Monday. The results were very good; they were unable to see any cancer left in the scan, meaning the chemo is working!!! Even though the news is good I still have some battling left to do. This week I have been injecting myself daily to boost my stem cell production. On Monday 26/11, I will be in hospital to measure said stem cells, and if there are enough, they will be harvesting them on Tuesday, where I will be free to go home again Wednesday. I will have my final dose of RCHOP-14 chemo the following week. Go forwards to early January; I will begin the stem cell transplant. I don’t have exact details on this yet; however it’s something with a very heavy dose of chemo from 1-5 days and then injecting me with my stem cells so they can begin to grow from scratch. I prefer not to be an expert on what’s going to happen to me so if you want to know more about it try google it. But it seems like this will knock me down for at least a couple months.

As I write this, I have my best friend Ziggy flying all the way to Copenhagen to see me. I am super excited to see him again and to show him Copenhagen.

Thank you all again for this massive amount of support I have received! Much love to you all!
