Raising money for a community library in the underprivileged settlement of Navutu, Fiji - with the Rotary Club of Lautoka,

Auckland

We are raising money for a community library in the underprivileged settlement of Navutu, Fiji. 30 miles and a world away from the tourist beaches near Nadi, Navutu is a struggling community but with a special spirit - and passion to make the prospects of their next generation brighter through education. Navutu was founded over 100 years ago by "Blackbirders' - Pacific Islanders forcibly relocated to Lautoka in Fiji (nicknamed 'Sugar City') to work in the region's sugar plantations. The community lacks basic services - it only got power and running water in the last year or two, and the nearest library or study space is a number of miles away in Lautoka proper.

Our project is raising money to build a library and study center for the children of Navutu. We are group of Kiwis, Aussies and Americans working with the Rotary Club of Lautoka on this project. All the building money will be handled by the Rotary Club. After 2 years of visiting and helping out with school supplies and rebuilding the road, our group of family and friends from New Zealand, the United States and Australia is seeking to raise $22,000 NZD, (approx. $21,000 AUD/$14,000 USD) for the cost of the building, sewerage, power hook up and additional school supplies.

The building design and the planned community group to manage the library and study center is based on the remarkable Koroipito Model Town near Lautoka which was developed over the last 15+ years by Rotarians working with New Zealand, US, Australia and European Aid money.
