Lockyer's Bone Marrow Journey

Hi my name is Lockyer and I'm 12 years old.

Recently I've been diagnosed with a rare condition called Aplastic Anemia. Which means my Bone Marrow isn't producing enough red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. These 3 things are vital to my health. (Blood Cells carry oxygen, White Cells fight infections, Platelets form clots to help with bleeding and bruising).

I had a check up in early March with my GP after myself and my parents had notice strange bruising and blood spots (Petechiae) appearing on my body. They sent me to Wellington Hospital. The next day I was sent on a life flight down to Christchurch.

And now I've been in and out of hospital between Christchurch, Wellington and now Auckland.

My. Immune system is 0.01.

I have numerous blood tests done to me.

As well has having Blood and Platelet Transfusions every so often.

There are 2 ways of treating my rare condition.

1 being a bone morrow transplant. My siblings were tested to see if they were a match but unfortunately the match I needed, needed to be a tissue match.

That sucked.

The other 1, is immunosuppression drugs, that I take up to 3 months that suppresses my immune system as it's attacking itself.

Best option is the bone marrow transplant with the same blood type and tissue as me.

And because none of my siblings are a match, we have to cast our net World Wide to see if a bone marrow transplant donor exists.

I'm the middle child of 5, I have an older brother and a older sister, a younger sister and little brother who just turned 5.

Even though I'm going through all this scary stuff, the thing that scares me the most is not having my siblings with me so we can be a family. I also know that my siblings will miss me and our parents aswell.

They will either be with me up in Auckland or down in Christchurch.

So this page will help go towards travel costs for my siblings to come and visit me while I'm in recovery in the weekends. And to make my recovery as comfortable as possible because it is going to be a long journey.

Any help is good help and myself and my family would appreciate all the help that we can get.

All funds and donations will be strictly for my brothers and sisters to visit me while I'm at Christchurch Hospital and Starship hospital.
