Contribute to a traditional guardian carving (pare) for Takarunga Hauraki, our plant nursery entrance and part of the Devonport Arts Trail.
Auckland
Contribute to a major new traditional carving, an entryway guardian called a pare, for Restoring Takarunga Hauraki. It will be part of the Devonport Arts Trail.
***Donations made in the next week will receive matching funds from a generous anonymous donor!***
This pare/ guardian carving has been created for RTH by master carver Natanahira Te Pona. (It is tīkanga to not show photos of the pare until it has been blessed, so the photo is the concept art.)
The story of our pare:
Riria Takarangi of Ngāti Paoa is the figure in the middle.
The Pātiki is the flounder of the area.
The Tūī is the logo for Restoring Takarunga Hauraki.
Takarangi design is between heaven and Earth.
The manaia’s on the ends represent the kaimahi whānau.
A wahine is always on the pare keeping the whānau and the area noa.
It will be placed at the entrance of Ngau-te-ringaringa Community Nursery in Devonport.
There will be a dawn blessing ceremony on Tuesday June 17th at 6am (all welcome!). This event will be followed by a nursery open day from 9:30-5 the same day to celebrate the pare.
Any donation to help raise the last bit of funding for the purchase and placement of the pare will be greatly appreciated!
