Men’s Koru Group- A HEART (Healthy Relationships in Tamaki) Movement support group

$2,000 donated
Given by 8 generous donors in around 12 months

Men's Koru provides a valuable space for local men as part of a Family Violence Prevention Movement, focusing on healthy relationships.

Glen Innes, Auckland

The HEART Movement is a local initiative supported by 15 key Leaders in Glen Innes who are local community members and advocates for Healthy Relationships. Aōtearoa’s oldest Family Violence Prevention Movement, we are committed to work towards increasing healthy relationships in every home in Glen Innes.

We have 20-25 attend Men's Koru weekly, almost entirely Māori and Pasifika (reflecting our neighbourhood) from 18 to 60 years old. Our kaupapa is simple; NO JUDGEMENT, NO ADVICE.

Some carry past trauma from exposure to violence and abuse, so support needs to be ongoing and regular, where healthy and non-violent models of communication are used and explored.

Men’s Koru operates as a safety valve for at risk tāne in our community, building much needed friendship and a strong sense of connection for those who participate in the group. Even better, when the men meet each other out in the community, we see those positive relationships spilling over into the wider community.

Over time we have seen much positive change for some of our most complex, challenging, and inter-generational issues. By helping Men in our community have healthy and positive relationships as husbands, uncles, brothers, koro’s, and sons, the future impact is immeasurable.

Men's Koru is currently hosted and supported by St Mary's Church in Glen Innes - 132 Taniwha Street
