This page will provide financial assistance to Mikyla and her family over the course of her treatment and beyond.
Taupiri, Waikato
On 30 November 2021, my beautiful niece, Mikyla was diagnosed with Accute Myeloid Leukemia. She is just 21 years old with her whole life ahead of her! And she has big plans for that life.
This diagnosis came out of the blue and has sent shockwaves through the family.
This type of Leukemia is aggressive and fast growing so two days after diagnosis, Mikyla started her first round of chemotherapy. Thrown in the deep end, that"s for sure.
Since then, she has received blood transfusions, plasma transfusions and platelet transfusions. Her body needs all these things in order to fight this disease and become well again.
We have now learned that Mikyla will need a Bone Marrow Transplant. This will happen in January 2022, and prior to that she will need to go through two more rounds of chemotherapy. The treatment is brutal, but she knows that there is no other option and she is ready to fight!
The Bone Marrow Transplant will take place in an Auckland hospital and she will need to stay there for 3 months. It is going to be a very long journey for Mikyla and her whole family. Her positive attitude will help her fight this disease. We know there are many hard days ahead. But it will be beaten!
So many of you have asked what can you do to help? We really appreciate the love and support we have received since Mikyla's diagnosis, but struggle to know what to say when asked this.
The family were hesitant in agreeing to this page being set up, but know that people do want to help. This really is the only way we can make sure that the next few months are as stress free as they can be financially, so that all the energy can be poured into getting our girl better again and ready to take on the world!
Mikyla is my niece, her mum, Jacqui is my sister.
Daily expenses during Mikyla's treatment. Includes petrol and parking costs during her hospital stay, food costs etc. Any money left over will be put towards a weekend away for the family when Mikyla has recovered.
The good news! 24 November 2022
Hi everyone, Mikyla here. Sorry it has been a while but I wanted to update you all as I near 1 year since diagnosis. On June 24th, I received my stem cell transplant at Auckland City Hospital thanks to a lovely anonymous donor in Germany. This was very tough on my body but after 2 months, I was able to return home. Since then I have been in recovery mode! There have been many ups and downs and we expect that to be the case for a while as my new cells and body grows stronger. On October 20th, I got the news that my biopsy results had come back all clear and I was officially in remission! My family and I are so relieved and hope it stays that way forever. I can’t thank you all enough for your kind messages and very generous donations over the past year, it just means so much and we would not have been able to get by without your support. So again, thank you all. I know a lot of you follow my journey on Facebook/Instagram so I will continue to keep you updated but in the meantime, have a fabulous summer! Love, Mikyla x
