Hey Friends, Family and Community,

Our precious daughter Miller Jacob was born with a rare condition called Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia (ACD/MPV) on the 19th of April 2021.

My husband Chad and I needed STARSHIP more than ever in April and May 2021.

Starship is the ONLY paediatric intensive care unit in New Zealand.

Alongside our family we saw the reality of how many unwell children/ tamariki there are in New Zealand on a daily and minute by minute basis.

It was a world we never knew existed, but it is there and the need is permanent and only growing, as our population gets bigger.

When Miller was 3 days old, we had the “round table” conversation that Miller needed to go to Starship to go on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine to save her, BUT in the same breath the doctor told us that Starship only had 3 ECMO machines and ALL of them were being used for other children and there was nothing more they could do. As we fell to our knees, no amount of money in that moment could help our daughter.

Thankfully, a machine became available later that day and we were blessed with 13 more days to get to know our beautiful daughter.

Miller passed away in our arms surrounded by family in Starship on the 5th of May 2021.

After Miller had passed we learnt of her condition. ACD/MPV has effected 249 children worldwide and 4 New Zealand families.

STARSHIP gave us hope and time!

We got to hold her hands, feel her tight grip, look into her dark brown eyes, care and love her, read her Hairy Maclary stories, introduce her to her family and dream of our future.

NOW is the time to raise money, so that no family needs to have a conversation at a round table about “resources”.

Chad and I are creating this fundraiser for Starship, in memory of our daughter Miller. Starship needs more beds and resources for our current and future families and children!

So all families can have specialist care and not have to wonder “what if the resources were available”?
