Nationwide Community Breast Milk Bank

$0 donated
Created 6 years ago

We have a community milk bank to help mothers meet other mothers on our Facebook page so that they can share milk throughout NZ.

Nationwide

Breast milk is liquid gold, and so it is extremely important for our babies to receive human milk. A large body of evidence has demonstrated that babies who are breast fed have a reduction in the incidence of acute and chronic illness and disease, show improvement in developmental outcomes and have reduced mortality and morbidity rates compared to their formula counterparts. In addition to this, research has shown that babies fed breast milk are protected against adult onset diseases including; type II diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and cancer and perform better in IQ tests.

The World Health Organisation state that scarcely one in three infants are breast fed exclusively in their initial six months of life and strongly recommend that breast milk is the sole source of nutrition for this time period.

Mothers Milk NZ (MMNZ) would like to help assist mothers who have a low supply, slow start or no supply due to: breast tissue damage, reduced amount of milk ducts present, Adopted or Fostered babies, mothers with multiples. (twins, triplets etc)

Mothers Milk NZ's involvement (page creator)

Tracey and I (Emma) started a Facebook page back in 2009, because we saw a real need for milk banking to come back to NZ after it's sudden departure in the 1980's due to the HIV scare. We have supported mother to mother milk sharing, however the need and demand on our page has increased by approximately 1000 new mums in the past year. Mothers are now becoming aware that not only is breast milk best for their babies, but the milk from another mother is better than formula, and will go at great lengths to find it.

This year, 2017, in March we helped a desperate mother source dairy free milk for her son who at the time had dipped down to the 5th Percentile. We sourced a freezer and freight company to work with us, delivering milk as far south as Dunedin from Auckland and back up the country along the way. We would like to take it a step further and be able to give the milk to the mothers for free, as the cost is quite a strain for some.

About us
