Support for Malcolm to adjust from truck to life in a wheelchair
Taupo, Waikato
Malcolm has been in the Trucking industry for over 30+years in jobs from dispatcher to driver, and better than google when it comes to directions!
On a trip to Brisbane it all changed. Out with family, the vehicle they were in was rear ended by a driver travelling at speed not paying attention. The side of the vehicle Malcolm was sitting on bore the brunt of the imlpact, forcing him and his seat under the front seat.
Taken to Princess Alexsandra Hospital, when he woke he and his wife Maree, who had flown over at the news of the accident, were told the diagnosis. Muliple rib fractures, haemothorax, stage 2 sacral pressure injury, crushing injury of spinal cord and T5 A 15 A spinal cord injury (fractured spine).
It was weeks before he was well enough to be flown to the Spinal unit at Otara, finally on NZ soil but miles away from home. Life will never be the same. It has certainly taken its toll on Malcolm , Maree and their 9 year old, Kiera.
Everyday will be a reminder that he wont be driving his truck, and will have to get used to life in a wheelchair. And getting his sharp memory and mental skillls back will be an ongoing task. There will have to be a lot of changes for them all, not only physical but mental and emotional as well. Funds raised will go toward the shortfall between real costs and what is provided by ACC.
Any support for Malcolm is most appreciated.
One of my very best friends and better than google for directions
Rehabilitation and ongoing medical expenses not fully covered by ACC, and living/housing adjustments.
More slow improvements 20 November 2023
Well, we can now add getting into the pool to Malcom's list of achievements so far. And he seems to have enjoyed it!. And the carers and physio are being great. He wil enjoy going back each week, and im sure Kiera would live getting in the pool with him when she is not at school.
He has had a couple of trips out with physio in his wheelchair, getting around the road for some fresh air and familiarisation of the hazards he may face. Something most of us forget about. High curbs, bumps in the path etc are all something he will need to keep aware of. Things are slowly progressing and i know that gets frustrating. Some days are better than others. Still needs his dart board set up but that will be down stairs and a way needs to be sorted for him to get there internallh rather than ouf and around the garden. New photos will be coming soon too.
.
Thank you all so very much. I know Malcom will be humbled by this and most thankful.
Thanks very much Greg. Truly appreciated.
