Nick's ultramarathon to fundraise for Elder Care Volunteers.
Auckland
I was in a work meeting recently, and to kick off the host asked us 'what are some of your best memories?'. I paused to think, and then said it was the time I got to spend with my grandad before he died.
Grandad was a journalist, Antarctic explorer, passionate student of history, books, and was honestly the kindest person anyone had ever met. Our conversations were chock full of war stories and hard-won lessons I'll remember for the rest of my life.
So when I recently discovered Elder Care Volunteers, I jumped at the chance to get to have more conversations like those. Elder Care Volunteers is a charitable organisation that connects volunteers with elder care home residents.
The result of their work could hardly be more important: increasing connection, reducing loneliness and depression, and improving the wellbeing of residents and volunteers alike.
So, on the 14th January I am going to run my first Ultramarathon (53km) to raise money for Elder Care. If you want to see NZ have more of the work Elder Care is doing, please consider donating and sharing this far and wide! My aim is to raise $2k by 5pm on January 16th :)
Your support would literally be life-changing, so thank you! Watch this space for updates on the run and this fundraising effort.
We believe that a happy life is a social one: a life filled with interactions that stem from meaningful relationships. We support the formation of friendships between care home residents and volunteers in central Auckland.
The mission is to grow- to connect more people, to facilitate more activities, to uplift more of our elderly community. To do this we need more resources for onboarding volunteers, transport for residents, and funds for resident-volunteer activities.

An update from Nick:
53km Ultra done!
A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me doing this and supporting the cause for Elder Care Volunteers .
That was definitely one of the hardest physical pursuits I've done so far - shout out to the Aotearoa Ultramarathon organisers for putting on a great event.
I took on this challenge to raise funds for ECV to do more to support the elderly in our community.
If this is a cause you want to support, there is still time to donate.
