A high profile central city community garden and cafe in Christchurch, showcasing the post-earthquake food resilience of the Garden City.

Canterbury

We’re building a unique edible garden for you and your community to enjoy.

Did you know that supermarkets only stock about three days’ worth of food? At the Food Resilience Network we are driven by the vision of a Christchurch that has the knowledge and skill to grow their own food and create a sustainable food network. We would also rather like to sit and have a coffee amongst fruit trees and veges in the central city.

This highly visible, accessible and engaging garden right in the central city is the perfect way for city for locals and visitors alike to gain inspiration, knowledge and wisdom about sustainable food systems. This unique destination in the North Frame of Christchurch’s central city will build on the history and future of this space as a food producing source/mahinga kai.

With the help of our community we have designed an orchard and garden that will be run by the community, for the community. There will be a community run café, operated by five social service agencies, who will serve up truly wholesome (and delicious) kai. An information centre for the Food Resilience Network. And of course lots of delicious, sustainably grown food.

About 30 organisations have jointly developed this project – which will adjoin the earthquake memorial at the former PGC site and point to a brighter future for the Garden City of New Zealand. We are looking for sponsors and donors to support this epic project and bring an edible park to the city.

Funds donated will be used for

· raised vegetable beds

· excavation and contouring of site

· establishment of community orchard

· garden shed

· toilets

· central outdoor amphitheatre

· interpretation panels

· plumbing and irrigation

· pathways, furniture and educational signage

· GeoTech services

· Health and Safety consulting, traffic management plan and other legal services

· Design and construction of community café and local food information centre
