Helping with Billys recovery and rehabilitation following a motorcycle accident

Wellington

On Thursday February 6th just before midday our brother Billy was involved in a life threatening motorcycle accident in Levin, NZ. Billy was travelling south after spending time with family when a vehicle unexpectedly pulled out in front of him to do a U turn, he was consequently knocked off his bike. Billy was flown to Wellington ICU in the Westpac Helicopter.

While Billy was in a coma in the ICU he had the works! Billy sustained the following injuries from the accident - Multiple brain bleeds, axonal injury to the brain, bleeding around the brain, collapsed left lung, splenic injury, carotid artery tear and significant facial fractures.

Our family has been by his side night and day focusing all our energy on his healing and recovery.

The most terrifying prospect at this point is that we do not know what the full extent of the brain injuries will be, but we do know he will have a long road of recovery ahead of him and he will need a lot of support from his family. We hope and pray that we will have the little brother we know and love fully awake and back with us soon. The reality with these kinds of brain injuries is that Billy may not ever fully recover. We are continuing to be positive and celebrate every small step it the right direction. We are grateful beyond words that Billy is alive!

Unfortunately the accident has meant mum and dad have stopped working temporarily so that they can be with Billy and try to come to terms with the situation. This is starting to take a toll financially. I am sure any parents will understand the need to be with their child at a time like this. Mum works as a Carer and we think she will be the best person to provide care for Billy (when he is able to come home) and be by his side through his recovery.

We are hoping to raise some funds to help Billy restart his life when the time comes, and more immediately help mum and dad with petrol costs( Levin to Wellington, soon to be Lower Hutt brain injury rehabilitation centre), some living expenses and anything that will help with Billy's medical needs and recovery. We understand everyone has different commitments. If you are not in a position to help, we totally understand.

Anyone that knows my brother would agree he is the kindest, most compassionate and easy going person who always brings a positive vibe to everyone that knows him, he is well loved and respected by his many friends! Billy is a passionate nature/outdoors/animal lover and a talented artist, he is a loving son to mum and dad, the best brother, a beautiful father and an awesome fun loving uncle to three nieces and two nephews! We love him SOOOO MUCH! Billy always has something nice to say, he would not think twice before helping others. He had just started a new job with a great boss who thought he was a fantastic young man with a wonderful outlook on life.

Please understand that Billy’s recovery will be slow, we are limiting visitors at this time but will do our best to keep people updated with his progress. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, please know we are beyond thankful for all positive energy, prayers and support!

We wanted to take this opportunity to remind people of the danger on our roads and how important it is to take extra care at all times and look out for motorcycles! An accident like this has so many effects on not only the victim but family and friends as well.

Happy Update   7 May 2020

Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all going ok given the unusual circumstances!

We have amazing news to share – Billy is home!!! After the lockdown levels were lifted slightly we got to bring Billy home for the rest of his recovery. I cant even begin to explain how happy we are!!!!! 👏😄🥳

Billy is getting better and better, he is working hard to regain his strength, body movement and stimulate his brain. From where we were only a few months ago to where we are today is nothing short of mind blowing in my opinion.

An EPIC THANK YOU to you all! Thank you for your comforting words, positive thoughts, healing prayers and magic, we really do believe this helped bring Billy back to us! I don’t know how we would have coped without all of your amazing support!! We feel so lucky!!!

Sending sooo much love and good karma to you all. Stay safe and take care of each other (from a distance 😉) 🙏💕

xxx
