If you live in Nelson, chances are you’ve felt Angela Herbert’s kindness ripple through our community or read the story of her recent accident in the Nelson Weekly and on the Nelson App. For over 20 years, she has supported hundreds as a medical herbalist, naturopath and life coach – helping people improve wellbeing, find direction, and navigate life’s toughest moments. As a mentor, she serves as a remote Kaitiaki for Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
Formerly a policewoman, she’s also an artist, ecologist, and has just completed her first book. She's also a distance runner and member of the Tribal Nations Motorbike Club who's kaupapa supports others in need. Angela lives a life of service and deep care for others in the Top of the South.
Now she needs us.
On 8 February, while cycling home, Angela was struck by a van at the Vanguard Street/Hardy Street roundabout. She suffered six pelvic fractures and has been in hospital ever since. Doctors estimate it will be around 9 months before she can walk again, with a long recovery after that. She is currently unable to move her left leg, and surgery is still uncertain.
Living alone will make her recovery – physically, emotionally, and financially – even harder. She will need ongoing support.
If Angela has ever helped you, or if you believe in supporting someone who has given so much, please consider donating.
Every contribution will help ease the pressure and allow her to focus on healing. Let’s rally around this humble and beautiful person.
I am a friend of Angela's who is in awe of her ability to give to others so selflessly and a beneficiary of her remarkable insights that are life changing .
Funds will support Angela’s long recovery, including any home adjustments needed for her return. It will also help cover essential living expenses and loss of income while she is unable to work.
Bad News for Angela 16 May 2026
Angela’s orthopaedic specialist has told her that her pelvic injuries are the worst he has seen. Following new CT scans she has been told her left pelvis was like shattered glass and that she never will be able to run again, which is her passion. Before her accident, she was a distance runner and would usually train 50km a week. As you can imagine, this news has retraumatised her. She is still having to deal with intense pain, her left leg doesn’t work at all and she has PTSD with regular flashbacks to her accident. She also has Sensorineural hearing loss in her left ear since the accident.
Angela misses her work, nature and chippy her cat. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. This currently feels like an impossible mountain to climb for her. She has spent 96 days hospital with more months ahead.
