Help Mel with the fight of her life after a diagnosis of a rare stomach cancer (Liposarcoma)

Oakura, Taranaki

Our loving Mum, Mel, who is in her 40’s, has recently been diagnosed with cancer. She has an enormous rare tumour in her stomach called Liposarcoma which is attacking her organs and major blood vessels.

Mum is going to be undergoing a very complex surgery in Auckland soon where a number of surgeons will try and safely remove the tumour, as well as some organs and it will be a long recovery ahead. It’s not certain they will successfully be able to remove the tumour safely. If they can’t they will try chemo or radiation and then look at surgery again.

Mum means everything to us and her step-daughter. We need her. Mum is always there to help anyone at any time and doesn’t like to ask for help because she likes to care for others. She has a loving partner, Wayne, who endlessly supports her. Mum and Wayne are both self employed, mum can no longer work and they don’t qualify for any government support. We are doing everything we can to help, but we can’t do much to help with the financial stress that is worrying Mum. We need her to be able to focus on getting stronger and being positive for this journey. We are all terrified and devastated that our Mum has to go through this. But we will all get through this together. It would be amazing to see our Mum get through this and keep living life. We are grateful for any help and support at this time for Mum.

Thank you, Taylah, Kate, Liam, Wil, and Neve x

Home from Auckland after Surgery  10 January 2024

After a marathon effort up in Auckland City Hospital Mum is finally home to continue her recovery.

It was a huge month starting on the 6th December with 17hours of surgery over 2 days. 10+ litres of blood replaced and 29 days in hospital (8 of which were in ICU/HDU).... The surgeons managed to remove approx 95% of Mums tumour, however there is a small percentage remaining up under her chest. The doctors took a portion of the remaining tumour and are doing a biopsy so that we can understand what the next steps may be.

The surgery was step one on her journey, but there is still a long road ahead.

We want to thank every single person who has donated in any way either via this page, the Meal train, personally or given their time to our family. We are so grateful and overwhelmed by the support.
