Cancer Survivor cycling Cape Reinga to Bluff to access risk reducing surgery
Auckland
I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer on June 9th, 2022 - the day before my 42nd birthday. After a major surgery and 25 rounds of pelvic radiotherapy I am tentatively cancer free, however things unfortunately became more complicated when I was diagnosed with Lynch Syndrome - the cause of developing my cancer at a young age and in the absence of risk factors.
Lynch syndrome is a genetic mutation that significantly increases cancer risk across a variety of organs such as uterus, ovaries, bowel, bladder/kidney, stomach, skin, brain, and possibly breast.
My estimated lifetime risk of bowel cancer could be as high as 80%, so when I say that I need to make hay while the sun shines I very much mean it!
Undergoing a risk reducing double mastectomy would allow me to eliminate my significant breast cancer risk as this cancer is extremely prevalent in my family. It is a life changing surgery but if it can help me to stay well for longer it is a sacrifice I am more than willing to make!
Unfortunately, due to lack of research linking breast cancer and Lynch syndrome I am not eligible to receive this surgery under the public health system (although they have told me it's definitely a good idea). I have had a consult with a private surgeon and have been quoted approximately 25 000 dollars for this procedure.
I will start my ride on February 19th over six weeks and I am hoping to schedule my surgery once the journey is done.
Here's to Surviving.
Any funds raised will go towards funding a risk reducing bilateral mastectomy without reconstruction.
It is DONE 💪 21 May 2024
I had my mastectomy this morning! Surgery went very smoothly and my pain levels are nowhere near as bad as anticipated. Once again the biggest challenge will be to make sure I don't do too much too soon. I feel like I literally had a weight lifted off my chest. So good.
Once again a massive thank you to everyone who helped me to get here 💪
Thank
💪 always
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I'm just doing my best to make hay while the sun shines and get myself the best possible odds.
Thank you Andy, I plan to stay alive and on my bike for as long as possible!
Thank you so much ♡
