Waikato

Ben Pakau was seriously injured last week in a freak swimming pool accident, while visiting an extended family member's home. Just like any other year, with all his cousins and friends doing the same, he dove into the pool, this time it ended in tragedy for this local young active 17 year old.

He was taken by helicopter ambulance to Middlemore Hospital, where it has been discovered that he has broken his neck and damaged his spinal cord. He is currently paralysed from the waist down and is facing a long time in recovery and then rehab up in Middlemore Hospital, not knowing what the future will hold.

The family are taking it a day at a time, visiting their son everyday to make sure that he keeps positive and holds onto the hope of recovery. The costs are mounting up, fuel and parking are currently the highest costs that they need immediate support with.

This family needs the support of their community, please donate today and we will make sure that they get the fuel they need to travel up to see their son and that costs for the future are covered. Donate whatever you can, $1 or the cost of a coffee, more if you can, if we all donate then we will be able to make a massive positive difference to this family, keeping them together during this difficult time.

Update from Ben's family - Jan 2021  19 January 2021

From Ben's family:

We are so grateful for all your help. Ben is in the spinal unit now still no movement at all from waist down and may need surgery on his hands, as nerves not working now, but he is not giving up. He has got a wheel chair that he can move himself, he is going to the gym every day and they are doing awesome work with him. Ben is also starting to eat food and is happy he can do so. Ben has days where he is down but with our support he is bouncing back. We would like to thank the Cambridge community for all their support, we couldn't be there for Ben with out your help, so thank you to everyone.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
