Help Julie get thymoma surgery

$48,825 of $48,000 goal
Given by 688 generous donors in 8 weeks

Julie needs $48,000 for surgery to find out whether she has cancer.

Hawke's Bay

Julie is a young mum from Cornwall living in Hawke’s Bay with her partner Tom. Together they have two little girls, four-year-old Luna and two-year-old Bee, and have made their home here. In May, doctors found a tumour in Julie’s chest and she has been living with the very real possibility of a cancer diagnosis ever since.

The only way to find out whether the mass is cancerous is through thymoma surgery. Julie was lucky enough to get a spot for the surgery in August, but on the way there, she received devastating news: a visa technicality meant she wasn’t eligible for public funding and the hospital couldn't do the surgery.

Fortunately, another hospital has offered to undertake the surgery and have a place for her in October. But without public funding, the surgery will cost around $48,000. As a single income family, this is an impossible ask - but it’s the only option left. Going back to the UK would mean being at the bottom of a long waiting list and as anyone who has been touched by cancer knows, an early diagnosis can make all the difference.

We’ve set up this Givealittle page in the hope of raising the money she needs to get this essential surgery and make sure she can see her beautiful girls grow up.

Every dollar counts and will make a world of difference for this young family. Thank you for taking the time to read Julie’s story and to everyone who has contributed: thank you from the bottom of our hearts, it means more than we could ever say.

Biopsy results are in  24 November 2022

The biopsy results are in, and Julie has had a run-down from the doctors at Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

The results show that the tumour would have spread and become malignant. Doctors told her that it was very large, and if it hadn’t been found and removed, it would have been terminal.

Fortunately, they were able to confirm that because it was removed in its entirety during her surgery, there is no need for further treatment. She is in the clear!

Julie’s overwhelming feeling is one of elation and gratitude. She is thankful to be here, to be able to see her girls grow up, and for the incredible support she has received. She is so, so glad that she made the leap and moved to New Zealand - the medical checks involved in the residency application process are the reason the tumour was found in time.

Julie, her family, and all of us behind her are so thankful to each and every one of you who contributed to this cause - we know now that you have helped to save her life. ❤️

With the tumour behind them, Julie and Tom are now able to move forward with their lives. They have just been granted New Zealand residency, and have decided to get married next year. There’s plenty to look forward to and we know they’ll build a happy life for their little family.
